From the Assistant Principal’s Office

This month, we’re focusing on something that truly defines us as a school community: kindness! Being a Laker isn’t just about school spirit or showing up to events, it’s about how we treat one another every single day.

Kindness, as you can imagine, can look different depending on the situation. Sometimes it’s offering encouragement to a classmate who’s having a tough day. Sometimes it’s choosing not to join in when others are tearing someone down. Sometimes it’s as simple as being patient, listening, or giving someone the benefit of the doubt. And sometimes, kindness means pausing and taking a deep breath to have a respectful conversation even when feelings are strong.

One important thing we remind students, and ourselves, is that kindness and accountability go together. Holding students to high expectations is not unkind; it’s caring. When we (teachers, administration, parents) address behavior, guide students to reflect, and reinforce our standards, we are helping them grow. We are helping them see that all actions have some sort of consequence, positive or negative. We can be firm and supportive at the same time. In fact, that balance is what helps our students become responsible, respectful young people.

Our teachers work incredibly hard every day to model this. They build relationships, reinforce expectations, and help students problem-solve when mistakes happen. Some days are smoother than others, and that’s the reality of working with young people who are still learning how to manage emotions and navigate friendships. But the goal remains the same: to create a classroom culture where students build one another up instead of tearing each other down.

Kindness also extends beyond the classroom. As a Laker community, we are strongest when we work together, students, staff, and families. There will be times when conversations are difficult or when news isn’t what anyone hoped to hear. Even then, we can choose to keep communication respectful and focused on solutions. Our shared priority is the success and well-being of our students.

When we choose kindness, in our words, actions, and responses, we strengthen our entire community. That’s what it means to be a Laker.

Have a great weekend!

~ Ms. Gilliam

Congratulations to eighth grader Mabel W.! She qualified for a spot to compete in the state spelling bee on March 28th. Only a handful of New Hampshire students achieve a spot at the state bee, so this is a huge accomplishment. Good luck, Mabel!

Northwood School Wellness Fair

Northwood School will be hosting our first Wellness Fair on April 2 from 6:00–7:30 p.m., and we hope families and community members will join us. The evening will bring together a variety of local organizations, businesses, and agencies that support physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Families will have the opportunity to explore resources available in our community, ask questions, and learn about programs and services that support healthy, balanced lives for children and adults. Many of our participating partners will also offer brief activities or demonstrations, giving visitors a chance to experience some of the ways they support wellness in our community.

Whether you are looking for ideas to support your child’s well-being, interested in learning about local resources, or simply curious about what our community has to offer, we hope you will stop by and spend some time with us!

News from the Library

On Thursday, we had a few surprise guests in the library for a while, which resulted in some impromptu book buddies.

Several eighth grade students were spending time in the library, and when Ms. Harbron's kindergarten class came in for their weekly lesson, the eighth graders happily sat down to read with them.

This was a great way to kick off next week's Read Across America celebration! It’s one thing to be a good student, but it’s another to be a great role model.

C.O.D.E. Night

(Community Outreach Digital Education)

On  March 18th from 4:00–6:00 PM, we will be hosting a Device Technology Support Night in the school cafeteria. Community members are invited to stop by with either new devices they may have received over the holidays or older stuff lying around they might want to have work again, and get help with setup or a brief introduction to how it works.

Our students will be available to provide one-on-one support, helping community members navigate common tasks and features of modern devices. Experienced adult volunteers will also be on hand to guide students, assist with more complex questions, or help with setting up personal accounts as needed.

There is no formal program or appointment required. Feel free to arrive anytime during the window, and we will connect you with a student helper. If additional support is needed, we will be happy to help coordinate follow-up assistance.

We look forward to welcoming community members for an evening of learning, connection, and shared problem-solving. Please contact Mr. Robert with any questions.
