Ready, Set, Upcycle!
We are gearing up for another great month with the 4th grade! Last year, the 4th grade classes spent the month of April working on projects that focused on re-using and upcycling furniture and materials that had been discarded. Some of the projects included wind chimes made from broken jewelry, chairs that were found on the roadside that got funky new paint jobs, and an old table that became a chalkboard table and gets daily use in the school library. One of the chairs won a prize at the Deerfield Fair!

In preparation for this fun and creative unit, we welcome families to send in materials that can go towards these inventive projects. Ms. Mawn will talk to the students about why upcycling is good for the environment and how it can inspire our creativity, and Ms. Keeley will show students how to incorporate their study of patterns, color, and texture into their projects.

Broken jewelry, small plastic toys, beads, old books and magazines, even empty matchboxes- anything can be reimagined and given a beautiful new purpose.
Safety Drill
Today we conducted a shelter in place drill which involved all students and staff moving to the second floor for a few minutes. This drill allows us to be prepared for events where hazardous materials may be released into the air. Everyone did a great job. Thank you to Bob Young, Northwood's Emergency Management Director and Officer Dan Gilon for being here and helping out during the drill!
Dental Services at Northwood School
Northwood School participates in the Lamprey Health Care School Based Dental Program. The program has been providing dental education and dental disease prevention services in schools since 1995. The goal of the program is to provide this dental health education and prevention services to all students. This program helps children understand to be healthy the mouth needs to be free from disease too. Healthy mouth, Healthy body is a component of their  health class. The program consists of several components. The first being oral health education.

Oral Health Education
Classroom presentations held in some grades. Age appropriate lesson plans which focus on good, daily oral hygiene habits, nutrition and the importance of oral health for total body health. The program works with our health teachers to integrate the lessons into existing curriculum.

Screenings
Dental screenings are available to all students with parental permission. After the screening, a letter including results of the screening and any areas of concern as identified by the hygienist will be sent home with the student.

Preventive Services
Preventive care is available to students without a dental home or those who have not seen a dentist in 12 months. Students must have a completed medical history to receive preventive services. Available services may include oral hygiene review, cleaning, sealants, fluoride varnish and temporary fillings. Follow up care including x-rays, dental exams, and restorative/fillings may be available to students who qualify. A completed mobile dental van permission form is required.

The program is coordinated by Bonnie Greaney, RDH, Public Health Hygienist of Lamprey Health Care. Ms. Greaney also provides the on-site education and services to the students. Students that require care beyond the capacity of this program will receive a referral to local dental services. Lamprey Health Care will work with parents to ensure students are able to access services and that financial and transportation issues are not a barrier to care.

Program information went home with all students via backpack mail at the start of the school year. If you didn’t receive information on the program please contact the main office.
