Northwood School Laker

April 22, 2022

During the week of May 2 - May 6, let's all show our appreciation for Northwood School's amazing teachers and bus drivers!

NH-SAS Administration is coming in May!

WHAT IS IT?

During the month of May, students will be participating in the New Hampshire Statewide Assessment System Program.  In conjunction with the New Hampshire Department of Education, annually, New Hampshire school districts and public charter schools are required by state law (RSA 193-C) and federal accountability laws (Every Student Succeeds Act) to assess students using a standardized assessment. Several assessments, outlined below, are utilized in order to comply with these requirements.

Statewide assessments are an important part of a student’s core educational program by providing:

  • An evaluation of student mastery of content and skills in various academic areas
  • Serve as one tool for measuring the degree to which students are on track to graduate high school and are college and career ready
  • Help inform future instruction in the classroom for all levels of learners

Along with student work on classroom assignments, projects, essays and local assessments, state assessment results give teachers, parents, and the community important information about where students are on their path toward academic success.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR NORTHWOOD SCHOOL?

During the month of May, Northwood School students will participate in the NH SAS, the general statewide assessment for English language arts (ELA), mathematics and science, in the following grades and content areas:

  • Grades 3-8 students are assessed in English Language Arts and Mathematics, and
  • Grades 5 and 8 students are assessed in Science

More information about the NH-SAS administration will be available after the April break!

Have a wonderful week off and we will see you in May!

News from the Art Room

7th/ 8th Grade 3D Design classes finished their first project making abstract sculptures out of cardboard. The sculptures are on display in the library.

Is there water on Mars?

NASA says so, but according to NASA scientists, the answer is more interesting than a simple yes or no. Maybe a Mars robot will someday encounter water near the surface of Mars. Come by Chesley library on Thursday, April 28 any time from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, and put your imagination in gear. Drive a radio-controlled robot on a simulated Martian landscape and try to find underground water. If you find water, or if you do not, the robot will send a message back to you at Mission Control.

This project was developed by the 2021 Summer STEM program at Northwood School.
