From the Technology Director

Here at school we have run into an increasing numberof computers misbehaving. Students and teachers are coming into my office saying their Chromebook keyboards are not typing or maybe they cannot use their mousepad. Sometimes it's the speakers or microphone that stop working. I even had a couple of teacher computers stop showing the extended or mirrored screen on the smartboard. These might seem to be interesting failures, but in reality it turns out to be an emotional response from the computer itself.

Most Windows and Mac computers will update themselves automatically. However, on occasion, this autoupdate feature might fail or stall. After a while some of these symptoms seem to pop up all of a sudden. Almost every time I see these errors, I immediately check the update status. Almost always, the computer has failed to update itself. Once I get the computer to finish updates, almost every time after rebooting the computer, everything is fine and dandy.

So if you run into this problem at home, check the update section of your software and see if you are lagging behind. If so, it might just be your computer having a tantrum. Get it updated and both of you will be happier!

SEASONAL ATTIRE

On Friday, October 31, we encourage students and staff to celebrate the season by wearing seasonal attire. Clothing featuring jack o' lanterns, spiders, bats, black cats, etc., is encouraged! Please note that students are not permitted to wear costumes to school.

News from the Library

The 5th graders in Info Tech had a STEM assignment this week, and they rose to the challenge!

Using only 20 plastic straws and 4 feet of masking tape, they were asked to build a structure that could support the weight of a small pumpkin. We used an apple as the initial test, and then had time to make adjustments.

The pumpkin was heavier than we realized, but several groups succeeded!

All the groups put in great effort, and laughed a lot during the experiment.

News from Kindergarten
