The Healthy Wisconsin Initiative was launched by health officials who join forces with organizations around the state. Created to improve health in communities by 2020 the plan highlights five priority areas: alcohol, opioids, tobacco, nutrition and physical activity and suicide. 

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services - Division of Care and Treatment Services (DCTS) received a federal grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) that will provide $760,000 annually for four years beginning September 30, 2017. The grant will help expand treatment for adolescents and youth with substance use disorders and/or mental health disorders. 

State lawmakers are looking to prevent methamphetamine production by expanding the tracking of some cold medicine purchases. A bill proposed by Rep. Cody Horlacher, R-Mukwanago, would require pharmacists to track all pseudoephedrine purchases electronically and share that information with the National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) database that follows these purchases across stores nationally.

A needle exchange program in the Bronx is handing out fentanyl test strips out of desperation to save lives after heroin overdose deaths skyrocket.
Funding Opportunities

Counties and tribes identified as high-need areas are eligible to request State Targeted Response to the Opioid Crisis Grant funding from the Department of Health Services (DHS). Funds can be used to decrease waitlists, service denials, or other unmet needs for individuals seeking treatment services for an opioid use disorder.
- Total funding to be provided: $1.8 million for 2017
- Application due June 15, 2017.

RCOs that are domestic private nonprofit entities in states, territories, or tribes are eligible to apply for the 2017 Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act: Building Communities of Recovery grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT). Funds can be used to support the development, enhancement, expansion, and delivery of recovery support services (RSS) as well as promotion of and education about recovery.
- Anticipated Award Amount: up to $200,000 per year for 3 years
- Application due Monday, July 3, 2017

This SAMHSA resource, released in 2016, addresses the needs of pregnant women with opioid use disorders and their infants and families.

This resource, created by coalitions in northwest Wisconsin, released in 2017, summarizes methamphetamine abuse in their region and includes recommendations for action.
