The other day, I was driving past Stewarttown Public School when I noticed a group of students running along the sidewalk. I'm not sure whether it was gym class or some other activity, but a few of them were enthusiastically making that universal arm-pumping gesture, hoping passing drivers would honk their horns.
Well, how could I resist?
I gave the horn a couple of honks, and those kids erupted into cheers! Their excitement was so infectious that I burst out laughing and found myself smiling for the entire drive home.
I've been thinking about that little moment ever since. Those students will probably never know how much joy they brought to a stranger driving past their school. And I wonder how often that's true in our own lives. How many times do we brighten someone's day without even realizing it? A shared laugh, a friendly smile, a small gesture of kindness or playfulness. Things that might seem insignificant to us can mean more than we imagine to someone else.
Perhaps that's one of the beautiful things about joy. It doesn't have to be planned or complicated. Sometimes it simply catches us by surprise, spills over from one person to another, and leaves the world feeling a little brighter.
And sometimes, all it takes is a couple of honks from a passing car.
