Sunday, October 11th

This Thanksgiving Sunday, we’ll gather to celebrate, give thanks, and pay attention to the grace that meets us in the ordinary moments of our lives. Through the story of one person who stopped, turned back, and gave thanks, we’ll wonder together: What have you noticed? Where have you encountered kindness, generosity, hope, or love?

At our 10 a.m. service, we’ll also have the joy of recognizing Charlie Bolton as a recipient of the Toronto United Church Council (TUCC) Baillie Volunteer Service Award and celebrating the many ways people of all ages offer their gifts in our community and beyond.

Join us online at 9 a.m. or in person at 10 a.m. as we celebrate Thanksgiving together.

All are welcome!

Join us Online for Worship @ 9:00AM

or

for In-Person for Worship @ 10:00AM

You can find the online service on Facebook Live or on our YouTube channel.

The service will be saved at both locations for viewing through the week.

NEWS

Being an October baby, I have always loved this time of year. The changing leaves, cooler days, Thanksgiving gatherings, and all the colours of fall make October feel a little special to me.

I’ve especially loved watching signs of the season appear around Norval. Mums and pumpkins have been showing up around the church, along with all those little touches that make the space feel warm and welcoming. Thanks to Jan Arnold and others who quietly make these things happen!

Maybe it’s because Thanksgiving is approaching, but it has me thinking about what we notice, and the stories we tell about what we see.

There’s an old question about whether the glass is half empty or half full. I’m not sure life is quite that simple. We can be honest about what is difficult while also being grateful for what is good.

But something repeated often enough can begin to feel like the whole story: things aren’t what they used to be, there isn’t enough, everything is getting harder. Those stories shape what we notice and even what we imagine is possible.

I’ve seen church communities get caught there too. We can become so focused on what we don’t have, what has changed, or what isn’t working that we stop noticing what is still possible. One thing I’ve learned over many years in ministry is that growth, in whatever form it takes, needs hope. It needs curiosity. It needs people willing to imagine, try, and sometimes try again.

I’ve often heard Norval described as a community with a “can-do attitude.” I love that description. Maybe a can-do attitude is something we keep choosing, believing there is still something possible among us.

Perhaps that is part of gratitude too. Not pretending the difficult things aren’t there, but noticing the rest of the story. People showing up. Kindness being offered. Ideas being tried. People still caring enough to imagine something better.

The difficult things are real. But they don’t get to be the whole story.

Perhaps ordinary grace is found when we choose to tell a bigger story. One honest enough to name what is difficult, grateful enough to notice what is good, and hopeful enough to imagine what might still be possible.

We are getting ready to welcome everyone to our Pollinator Garden Open House on October 18th, and we would love your help making the day extra sweet!

Do You Love to Sing? We Could Use Your Help!

Once a month, Tina Talving shares her musical gifts at a short worship service and hymn sing with residents at Extendicare. She plays the piano, and we are looking for someone who enjoys singing to help lead the hymns.

If you enjoy singing, this is a great way to share your gifts and bring joy to the residents of Extendicare! The service takes place at 2 p.m. on the third Sunday of each month.

This is a simple but meaningful way for Norval to connect with and care for our wider community.

If you would like to learn more, please email or call the church office, and we will connect you with Tina.

Thank you for being part of this special ministry!
