Updates To The 2018-19 School Calendar

The Connecticut Department of Education changed the standard regional calendar requirement this year, giving districts more flexibility to schedule around the needs of their schools and students. These changes went into effect after the original 2018-2019 calendar was drafted. As a result, the district has proposed updates to improve the schedule with student learning in mind.

The updated calendar gives students a full week of school before Labor Day. In the prior version, the first four weeks of school were short weeks due to Labor Day and the timing of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Changes include the following shifts at the beginning of the year:
+ The first day of school for all students Grades 1 -12 will be Monday, August 27
+ Kindergarten students will have a staggered entry on Monday, August 27 and Tuesday, August 28

The updated schedule will be voted on during next Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting. Click here for the revised version.

Kahler Named Norwalk Paraeducator Of The Year

Sue Yin Kahler, a long-time Instructional Assistant at Columbus Magnet School, has been named Norwalk Paraeducator of the Year. Mrs. Kahler will represent Norwalk paraprofessionals in the Anne Marie Murphy Paraeducator of the Year program, sponsored by the Connecticut State Department of Education and the School Paraprofessional Advisory Council. Mrs. Kahler was chosen for her dedication not only to academic responsibilities, but also for her involvement in school-wide initiatives and enrichment programs, and for her passion for integration of the arts into the school. As a Higher Order Thinking (H.O.T.) school, Columbus Magnet School has an integrated approach to learning that heavily involves the arts. To read the full story click here .
High School Program Of Study

As part of the commitment to providing more rigorous academic courses at the high school level, Norwalk Public Schools is expanding its high school credit requirement from 20 credits to 26 credits over the next few years. This increase also meets the pending state requirement of 25 credits, plus one credit for a Capstone Experience.

Over the past year, administrators and educators have worked to update the Norwalk Public School Program of Studies to meet the college and career ready benchmark. Updated credit requirements will go into effect starting with the class of 2020 through 2022 and beyond. These graduation requirements provide sequences of courses, with the ultimate goal of culminating in a Capstone Experience. Beginning with the class of 2022, all students must successfully complete this Capstone Experience, allowing them to take learning off the page and out into the real world.

To ensure that appropriate courses are available to students in order to earn the credit that they need, and decrease study halls, NPS has made it a priority to hire more high school teachers.
