The critical role of cultural responsiveness in today’s nonprofits
|
|
Today, our organizations are the most diverse they’ve ever been, with individuals from five generations co-existing in the workplace. In a world fueled by the immediacy of social media and constant news updates, we are continuing to diversify. Nonprofits are encountering potential workers who are linguistically, ideologically, and culturally different. And these new workers often do not aspire to assimilate to what has always been in terms of workplace culture and expectations.
As both educator and nonprofit leader, I have experienced the value and need to engage in culturally responsive practices. As I grow older in years and in my field, it’s imperative that I know, understand, and challenge myself to lead in a mindful way.
Some might assert that we, as a society, are just too sensitive — that we can’t and shouldn’t try to appease and include everyone. I beg to differ.

Building a High-Performing Nonprofit Board: A Roadmap to Success
|
|
By Erin Hedges, Hedges
Creating a high-performing nonprofit board isn’t as simple as snapping your fingers, but it is an achievable goal with intentional action. Many nonprofit leaders recognize the need for improvement within their boards, understanding that excellence in governance is key to organizational success.
In cities like Indianapolis, where the nonprofit sector has enormous potential amidst thriving corporate, life sciences, university, and religious institutions, the stakes are high. Reports like the Leading with Intent study from the National Index of Nonprofit Board Practices underline the urgency, revealing significant gaps in board effectiveness:
- Nearly half (49%) of all chief executives reported they lack the right board members to establish trust with their communities.
- Only a third (32%) of boards prioritize knowledge of the community served.
- Even fewer (28%) prioritize membership within the community served.
These findings underscore the need for boards that are not only high-performing but also deeply connected and responsive to their communities' needs. As nonprofit leaders, you hold the power to enact change. Here’s a roadmap to guide you:
