8 Steps Nonprofits Can Take to Adopt AI Responsibly

The breakneck rate at which people have adopted the generative AI writing tool ChatGPT has been astonishing. ChatGPT, which creates new text based on user prompts, surpassed 100 million monthly active users in just two months, according to data compiled by UBS. Compared to TikTok and Instagram, hit platforms that took nine and 30 months, respectively, to reach that same benchmark.
Using the Scoville scale, a scientific measure of the spiciness of chili peppers, we can, somewhat unscientifically, analogize our way to understanding just how much of an outlier the ChatGPT phenomenon really is in the history of software applications.

Tightening Regulatory Landscape
Gone are the days of lax online defenses. New regulations, enforced by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) since December 15th, 2023, mandate robust cybersecurity measures. Organizations must now report security breaches within four business days, with substantial consequences for non-compliance. This heightened transparency demands a proactive approach to cyber defense, making it more than just a checkbox on a compliance list.

Volunteers of America Ohio & Indiana has been awarded a $2.8 million grant from the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation. The funds will be used over three years to create a new Indiana-based Fresh Start Connect program designed as a critical care pathway to meet the needs of Hoosier families by preserving the health of pregnant moms affected by substance use disorder (SUD). The Indiana Music History Project, an Indiana nonprofit whose mission is to preserve Indiana’s rich music history, has accepted a private collection donation, valued around $100,000, with the goal of keeping rare recordings and artifacts in Indiana. Part of the collection is currently on display at the Indiana State Library in an exhibit titled “Amazing Indiana Music Stories.” The exhibit runs through the end of March. Read more
Tangram has been selected as an official charity partner for Gen Con 2024, the largest tabletop gaming convention in North America. Gen Con has a long-standing tradition of supporting local charities and has raised over $425,000 for its charity partners to date. Read more
Community Health landed a $5 million gift to support housing for people with substance-use disorders at its Fairbanks Recovery Center. The donation, which will be paid over five years, is a gift from local philanthropist Julie Wood on behalf of the Tom & Julie Wood Family Foundation, whose services include furnished apartments, recovery programs, support meetings, an onsite residential manager, and a food pantry. Indy Parks announced nineteen Indianapolis parks now have public access to free high-speed wireless internet, with another 10 expected by the end of the summer. This is part of the city’s effort to invest $500,000 in federal American Rescue Plan Act funding to provide free internet access in Indianapolis public spaces. Read more
