COMMUNITY CORNER

Opportunities, shout-outs and requests.

Dear Tracy,

The new families are here!!

Last month 10 excited, ambitious (and slightly nervous) families started their new beginning at Saranam!

One mother described it like winning the lottery. In a way it was; we had nearly 120 applications for the 10 available slots.

Like every year, everyone carries with them a different story. But what every person shared during orientation was this common sentiment:

“It is not IF I will be successful, but WHEN I am successful.”

This is the optimism- and confidence- that we hope infuses families every single day with us. All these families join us with tremendous hope and with every passing day, we will soon see it transform into belief.

Some of our alumni joined us to welcome the new parents and share words of encouragement and wisdom from their own time at Saranam.

"I hope you succeed and know that you have people who care for you...celebrate your achievements but raise the bar each time. Never stop!" -Saranam alumnus

The adults are already on their way. Right out of the gate two parents are enrolled in medical programs and the rest are excited to discover where their passions lie. The next few weeks will be full of career assessments, study skills, and brushing up on fundamentals.

What about the kids, you ask?! We have 24 new ones; 12 toddlers, 7 elementary schoolers, and 5 middle and high schoolers. Every one of them smiled ear to ear when they saw the rooms that welcomed them and the new friends they can play with.

With our halls very cute and very busy this fall, this is a great time to get involved with tutoring, family nights, supply drives and more! Make sure you’re signed up for our volunteer newsletter so you can plug into the fun.

Thank you for making it possible for these new families to be with us. We know your support is never an IF but a WHEN and we consider ourselves so lucky to have you by our side.

2024 Virtual Open House

Did you catch our virtual open house?

In August we featured virtual tours of all of the gorgeous apartments our volunteer decorators poured their hearts into. It is amazing to see what they can do with the items our community donates through the year.

After seeing the tears and awe of our families as they moved in, we can unequivocally say they were a hit!

As you watch, see if you can spy the beautiful upgrades we are rolling out in some of our apartments. Let us know what you think!

If you missed a day, videos will be available all year on our website at saranamabq.org/events.

Thanks to our Apartment Angels!

Words cannot express our gratitude for everyone who made our apartments come together. Their work in the steaming August heat ensured that families could walk into a new space and it could immediately be HOME.

It is a huge undertaking to fully furnish, decorate and prepare 10 apartments. This year 12 decorating teams spent three weeks wielding their magic decorating wands for us!

We also want to thank some special quilters, bakers, movers and makers:

  • Talented cooks who baked casseroles and desserts to stock families’ freezers.
  • Quilters who sewed warmth into every stitch.
  • Handypeople who put together beds and transported décor and furniture where it needed to go.
  • The many, many people who donated household items to furnish these homes and the organizers who helped it all go smoothly.

The care you showed will always be etched in the lives of our families. Thank you!

ABQ the Interview

Want to know more about Saranam’s founder and Executive Director, Tracy Weaver? You’re in luck! Tracy was featured in Albuquerque the Magazine’s: The Interview, August edition. She talked about how she came to Albuquerque and her journey starting Saranam. Here's a sneak peek into the interview:

"I just believe people can change. If they are provided opportunities, they're gong to be better than they ever imagined they could be. For a lot of our families, this is just the opening door, then they cam become anything they want. That's inspiring to me."

A Dose of Hope

We know you love to hear about how our families are doing after they leave our program! One of our alumni shared her journey at Saranam with KRQE.

After exiting, she became a dental assistant and has spent the last years happily, and successfully, supporting her son.

“Her journey is a testament to the power of community support and the possibility of a brighter future. ‘I just look forward to him having a great future. And our relationship. And that he knows that his mom will always be there for him,’ she expressed.”

Alumni Reunion Needs

Our Alumni Reunion is just around the corner! We have a lot of fun planned- from prize drawings, visits from BCBSNM’s Blue Bear, Chick-fil-A, crafts and more!

We can still use some help making it a great event for the families who will be joining us. If you can help with any of the following, let us know!

  • Bring a dessert or donate soda/water
  • Lend us a shade structure for the day
  • Volunteer! Shifts are available before, during and after the event

Home Run for PNM!

Help us do the wave for PNM Resources Foundation! With their support, families were able to attend the MLB Homerun Derby at Albuquerque Isotopes stadium!

They nominated us as the featured nonprofit of the night, donated 60 tickets, and gave one of the kids from our program the chance to throw the first pitch! It was a night to remember!

Wishlist Update

Our Walmart SparkGood wishlist has a new link! The last one got tired, so we replaced it and loaded it with all we need to make our families’ first semester successful.

We keep this updated throughout the year with items our families need. Keep it bookmarked- our Coat Drive will be starting soon. If you can donate, we appreciate your support!

HARD work this summer

A big thank you to the groups who have worked hard through this sweltering summer to make sure our campus is the place our families deserve. We had 5 groups from Be the Neighbor join us this summer, doing a TON of landscaping projects, including designing super-cool rock gardens.

We also had an extra special “National Women’s Day” with a girl-power group of volunteers from Sandia Labs Federal Credit Union. They helped us move a literal mountain of mulch for our playground AND helped with apartment prep.

Thank you for braving -and bringing- the heat with us!
