Announcing National APP Week September 25-29, 2023
During National APP week September 25-29, 2023, there will be organized events to celebrate and appreciate UCSF APPs. There will be educational sessions, awards and acknowledgments of APP contributions through social media, newsletters and in-person gatherings.
On Wednesday September 27, 2023 there will be 12-1pm lecture by Elisabeth Gundersen, MS, ANP-BC "Building Tools for Serious Illness Communication and Resiliency into your Practice. Zoom link.
Also on this day, the 2023 Exceptional APP Awards Virtual celebration will go live on the UCSF Health Recognition site. We invite you to share in this momentous occasion by watching at your leisure or by joining us at any one of the UCSF Watch Party locations near you 5:15-7pm. Light refreshments will be served.

Tara Lacey named as the APP Oncology Summit 2023 APP Most Valuable Provider Award
The APP Oncology Summit (APPOS) conference was held on August 18 and 19, 2023 in San Francisco. APP Oncology Summits are developed with and for advanced practice providers including nurse practitioners (NPs), physician assistants (PAs), pharmacists, and RNs. Read more about MVP awards. Tara's essence resonates with this award--a true MVP who seamlessly blends clinical knowledge, compassion, interdisciplinary collaboration, and mentorship. In her work, Tara embodies the core values that this award symbolizes. She has also been recognized with a UCSF PRIDE award. She has published extensively on the topics of cancer care, serves as a co-instigator for numerous cancer therapy clinical trials and is the clinical site coordinator for the UCSF Cancer services APP fellowship program. Cancer Center APPs representing UCSF at an Oncology Summit
Brittany Dingler, PA-C moderated a multidisciplinary head and neck oncology tumor board and served on the APPOS planning committee. The panel was an innovative education method using real world cases to illustrate the principles of head and neck cancer care and the importance of the multidisciplinary team. Laura Zitella, NP presented "Updates in Lymphoma" and also served on the APPOS planning Committee. More about APPOS.

Pediatric Trauma Surgery adds new PA
Jenny Mustard, PA is the newest team member of the BCH Oakland Pediatric Trauma Surgery Program. Since graduating from the OHSU PA program in 2018 she worked with cardiology adult and pediatric population including procedural care in cath lab and acute inpatient setting. With a strong interest in community health initiatives she partnered with the department of health in American Samoa in their prevention and treatment of rheumatic heart disease in children. When not working, she enjoys traveling around the world in the backcountry skiing and kiteboarding. Welcome Jenny to UCSF BCH Oakland and the APP community at large.

UCSF's Simulation Lab
Surgical and Critical Care NP fellows completed the annual Simulation-Based Training on August 21, 2023 at Kanbar Center for Simulation and Clinical Skills. Fellow’s practiced critical care bedside invasive procedures on task trainers and course leaders Megan Del Vecchio, AGACNP-BC and Karin Clifton, ACNP-BC developed three critical care scenarios allowing fellows to practice their procedural, knowledge, and communication skills on high-fidelity mannequins. Coming Soon: New APP Billing and Coding Module (UC Learning)
To improve APP comprehension, efficiency and implementation of billing and coding, there is a new module. Anticipated launch of the module on Monday, October 2, 2023. The due date to complete the module is Tuesday, October 31, 2023. This has been announced to your managers, and we have asked them to work with you to identify 60 minutes during October for module completion. This is applicable to UCSF and BCH Oakland NPs, PAs and midwives. Not applicable to CRNAs.

Retiring Paging System September 12, 2023
September 12, 2023 all pagers will forward to Voalte. Voalte was rolled out early 2022 to modernize and standardize inpatient clinical communication with institutional adoption of Voalte over the past 18 months. PagerBox retiring September 30, 2023
Pagers used to cover a service will be copy forwarded to the equivalent Voalte role.
Inorder to receive pages sent to a sevice pager, providers will be REQUIRED to log into the equivalent Voalte Role/Unit combinations.
Before Sept 12 go live test pager forwarding:
- Log into Voalte using "APP" role
- Confirm access to the "On-service UCSF PARN/MZ/OAK/MB" role
- Page yourself via CareWeb
- If you do not receive the page--> notifiy Clinical communications
Retirement of Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland paging system will take place in 2024.

Bedside Procedures and Soiled Instruments
Starting in September there will be new "Single Cycle Disposable Bins". These bins look out take out containers and are to be used to contain and transport dirty instruments. So if you perform any bedside procedure and uses single use instruments do not leave the instruments on the counter of the dirty utility room. Instead, notify the Charge Nurse if you are doing a procedure so the new process of using these single cycle Disposable Bin can be followed.

Hani Gutierrez, MSN, RN, CPNP BCH Oakland Manager APP is the most recent APP to become a Lean champion. She is the first in her leadership cohort to reach this milestone and joins a dynamic group of interprofessional leaders who have earned this distinction. Teach back is the culmination of UCSF Health's most intensive continuous improvement training program. Participants are evaluated on knowledge and comprehension of fundamental principles.
