JUSTICE, EQUITY AND INCLUSION

Uncertainty

Contributed by Dr. Michael Rabow

In the setting of a discussion about what is not yet certain, Dr. Back makes 3 recommendations:

  1. Name the emotion. This can reduce the intensity of the emotion
  2. Talk about "what if" This allows you to put the discussion in terms of "possibility" and allows the patient a chance to figure out how they might cope. Then you can talk about the next step
  3. Model the kind of conversation you want to have when its the actual, serious conversation. This can be an important reassurance to your patient.
