Dear State Commissioners and Ex-Officio Members,

An ancient curse supposedly says, “may you live in interesting times.” To say that these times are interesting would be a vast understatement. But I say we stand that “curse” on its head, making these times not a curse, but a blessing. The challenges we face because of the COVID-19 pandemic create great opportunities for us, because it is during times of adversity that our virtues can show forth in their full strength.

The military families we serve are facing significant challenges. Schools are closed now across the United States (please see this helpful document compiled by our excellent national office staff), imposing on parents the burdens of homeschooling while simultaneously preventing many of them from going to their own jobs. Their uncertainty is increased by DoD’s freezing of PCS moves through at least May 16. When schools do reopen and the PCS transfers begin again, those families will need our help more than ever as they transition into new schools. Let’s be ready when that happens.

Many of you are also facing adversity. Superintendents are working hard to manage districts grappling with online learning, homebound staff, and children who need meal and special education services. State and federal civil servants must work through restrictions to which they have been unaccustomed. Even private citizens are dealing with a “new normal” that makes ordinary tasks seem suddenly extraordinary. Here are just a few resources to help. Please share these with anyone you believe will benefit.

First, read this excellent article by a serving officer who shares some insights on how to regain control of our daily lives.

Do you know parents who are experiencing the stress of having their children at home so much of the time? This document may help.

How to handle Month of the Military Child when schools are closed? Here’s one possible solution .

I know you have the same courage, fortitude, resourcefulness, and selflessness that we so admire in the military families we serve. We will get through this together as we continue to serve military-connected students. It’s a privilege serving on the same team with you.

Respectfully,
John I. "Don" Kaminar
