C&O Dining Car Personnel Manual -1956
This 21-page manual was developed by C&O's dining car department in 1956 to explain how diners were to be operated. It included details on management of personnel, how they were to treat customers, etc. It also showed how meals were to be prepared and presented. There were such mundane things as to how to handle items lost by customers, and more important things about how to treat customers. An interesting spotlight on how dining service was to be conducted in that long-gone era. DS-09-345 $9.95

The George Washington:
The Most Wonderful Train in the World 1932-1950
The Chesapeake & Ohio Railway's George Washington was one of the last great long distance heavyweight passenger trains in the United States, famous for its understated opulence and the quality of its service. This new book relates the entire story of that train, from its conception during the depths of the Great Depression until its replacement by a train of lightweight streamlined cars after World War II.

The book begins with a brief description of the evolution of the railroad itself and the influence the early surveys of George Washington had on the ultimate route of the road. Consideration is given to the fastidious and meticulous planning of the train together with comprehensive analysis of matters of historical significance.

Of particular interest are the brief depictions developed by the planners detailing the historical figures, events and locations whose names were honored on various cars of the train. Included also are thorough overviews of the locomotives and cars that made up this first completely air conditioned, long distance, overnight train along with descriptions of its operation and the experience of riding on The George. Lucius Beebe once remarked, "Nothing topped The George Washington at its golden noonday".

Vicariously enjoy a comfortable trip in one of the elegant Imperial Salon coaches, a Mount Vernon Dinner in Gadsby's Tavern and a night cap in the observation car Commander-In-Chief before retiring to a comfortable berth as a guest of the Marquis LaFayette, Compte de Rochambeau or Baron von Steuben, and Chessie!

Silver in the Diner:
A Guide to Dining Car Silverware Book
To use the food metaphor, this is a delicious book! It is top quality in appearance, in printing, in the quality of the photos, and in overall appeal. In short---I liked the book.

It is certainly, in this reviewer’s opinion, the best book yet about dining car silverware, and it fits well with the several others that have been published dover recent decades. They all have different good data, but this books gives the best general overview of the subject, I believe.
Collection of dining car silver flatware and hollowware has been an important element in railroadiana collecting over the past 50-60 years. It came into prominence after the end of the diners of the grand style with the coming of Amtrak and reached its peak in the 1990s. Today this is still an important element in the railroad memorabilia field.

The present book is encyclopedic in its treatment and approach covering the heavy “hotel plate” silverware used by each major, some pretty minor, railroads. The illustrations are excellent. Each line has a brief paragraph of history and then the photos of its ware.
B&O, of course, always the top railroad in dining car service and ambiance, is covered well. C&O gets good coverage as does Pere Marquette (thanks to C&OHS member Dan Navarre who is the expert on this line’s silver). Photos of menus and other elements of the service are included to round out a well-balanced book.

In all it is a great treatment that I highly recommend for anyone interested in dining car service.

Hardbound, heavy 100-lb paper, 390 pages, hundreds of photos.
