NOTES FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

After a frustrating loss in the girls' soccer game to Stratton Mountain School during Parents' Weekend (the lone goal was scored by SMS with just 57 seconds remaining in the game), two of the girls told me, "We should just stick to lacrosse."

While I understood their comment to be a mere expression of their discouragement, I responded a quick piece of feedback. "Or, you need to take more shots." They nodded in agreement, and what followed was a productive discussion about the highlights of the game, what they did well, and their tendency to hesitate with the ball. A few hours later, the very same girls were dressed up and ready to serve at Gala with smiles on their faces -- the day's earlier loss having been processed in an appropriate manner knowing what it will take to score in future games, and ultimately put a win on their record.

While soccer games and co-curricular activities understandably carry less weight than disappointment on the snow, this is a quick snapshot of our students' resiliency. The ability to reflect upon and process through failures and disappointment -- rather than dwelling on them or asking "what if" is one of the things that makes GMVS the magical place that it is, and one of the things that makes ski racing a sport that truly shapes our character.

Over the summer, many of us read Alfred Lansing's account of Ernest Shackleton's "failed" expedition to the South Pole in Endurance. While Shackleton and his crew may have failed -- they never did make it across the Antarctic continent -- their resilient attitudes kept them in the present for the duration of their harrowing journey. Surviving 10 months stranded on open seas and ice floes quickly became a success in itself. One of the things that made this "failed" expedition a success, was the crew's unrelenting ability to focus on their future survival (not what had gone wrong) and their underlying support for one another and their team at large -- even when their crewmates started to rub one another the wrong way.

The GMVS experience, taken as a whole isn't easy for any student. There are good days that might feel easier than others. But, it too is a journey filled with unexpected ups and downs. It is my hope that we can all be relentlessly positive, forward thinking, and respectful of our collective community. Those are the very characteristics that brought so many alums back to our little campus on Moulton Road for our very successful 2018 Gala. And, they are the characteristics we all want to remember about the GMVS of which we were a part of.

COLLEGE APPLICATION SEASON

There is a lot happening on campus connected to the college process. Seniors have been visiting colleges and meeting with coaches, and juniors and seniors are meeting with college representatives who are coming to visit them on campus at GMVS. By the time the leaves have fallen and GMVS students head west, interested students will have heard from representatives of a wide range of colleges, spanning the continent from British Columbia to Maine.

Other work includes taking tests and writing essays. Continuing the tradition we began last spring, we are offering official on-site test administration of PSATs, ACTs and SATs this month. Taking these tests in familiar classrooms, on a schedule in line with a normal GMVS day, is a great opportunity for our students and, while it takes a lot of effort to pull it off, it is worth it!

After lunch and in free periods English teacher Mary Ganzenmuller and college counselor Andrea Harris, as well as many advisors, are busy meeting with students and reading drafts of college essays. Our students are working to tell authentic, thoughtful and entertaining stories only they could tell. And, on Monday nights, Andrea meets with individual seniors and groups of seniors in the New Dorm Common Room. The room hums with the camaraderie of seniors helping each other navigate applications.

While much of our focus is on our current senior class, we haven't forgotten about those next in line. The morning after Gala, sleepy juniors and their parents selected from a delightful array of breakfast goodies (Thanks, Melissa!) before settling in for 90 minutes of information about enjoying the college process. Students and parents left with a folder of ideas to help the next 18 months be smooth, enjoyable and fruitful.

We are fortunate to have Lindsay Kingston, from Long Trail Educational Services, offering a 9 session prep course complete with a full diagnostic, practice tests and concentration on each of the ACT subjects. The class begins this month and will continue through the winter. Juniors and sophomores interested in the class should contact Nik Laskaris [email protected] to sign up.

A GRAND THANK YOU FOR A GRAND EVENT

GMVS Board of Directors and staff would like to thank all of the parents, grandparents, alumni, friends, volunteers, and students for participating in Homecoming & Parents' Weekend 2018! The weekend kicked off with our annual golf tournament played in a best ball format with riveting competition among all involved.

Golf winners included: Sugarbush with the overall team win scoring a 58. The kids team winners were Davis, Kellogg, Postal, and Riis. Closest to the pin was Ng for the kids and MacGuffie '85 for the adults. New this year was a longest drive contest with a very short driver - Worm was the winner, see photo. We would like to thank all of our golf sponsors for making it a great day on the links. Many of our alumni and staff continued the celebration during the alumni party held at Rumble's Kitchen after awards.

Special thanks to the Class Parent Representatives for hosting class parties on Friday evening for all parents and students. Word on the street was that this was a great way for parents to get to know each other (or get reacquainted), for students to come together as a class, and a terrific addition to Parents' Weekend.

The campus was full of life and packed with activities on Saturday and Sunday that included a condensed version of "A Day in the Life" of a GMVS student, a hike with Colin Rogers, boy's and girl's soccer games, alumni soccer game, coaches' meetings, auction preview, and College Boot Camp.

Finally, we would like to extend our sincere appreciation to all who attended the 2018 Glide into Winter Gala. The evening was a tremendous success and we cannot thank each of you enough for your support. Volunteers came in droves to transform the gym into a winter wonderland, the tireless work of the
procurement committee created amazing auction packages, and the service by our students, staff, and parents was unparalleled. Everyone seemed to enjoy the evening and our feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The entire GMVS community came together to make this one of the best yet.

BLUEBERRY LAKE TRIATHALON

The Blueberry Lake Triathlon comprised of 16, six person teams with each team having a representation of boys and girls in all age groups with Nordic and Alpine athletes mixed in together.

The route consisted of a 2.5 mile run, 6.8 mile bike and a 400 yd swim across Blueberry Lake. Two members per team competed in each leg.
Under autumn skies and a moderate southerly head wind, the athletes went all out for bragging rights of individual leg victories and overall team results.

The swim portion was the highlight with a quick education in contrast therapy-hot/cold athletic recovery methods with water temps right around 50 degrees!

It was a fun and rewarding all school athletic event and the results for overall team winners are still be tabulated. Stay tuned for that announcement and prize ceremony.
USST CAMPS & GMVS COACHES

Living up to its High Performance Center designation from US Ski & Snowboard, the GMVS Alpine staff members continue to be sought after as guest coaches for USST prep projects. In this prep phase, coaches Nate Bryant, Jeremy Transue, Charlie Powell and Dan Bell have worked with the highest level American athletes in projects in the US, New Zealand, and Chile.

Former GMVS Head Boys' coach Sasha Rearick, now in charge of US Ski & Snowboard's Project 26, invited Nate and Jeremy (Worm) to work summer camps in California and New Zealand respectively. The takeaways for both Nate and Worm was a validation of what we do in our own programming and a renewed commitment to greater variability in our training course sets and environments.

Charlie Powell spent the week prior to our Valle Nevado camp working with former GMVS Head Boys' coach Mike Day in a training camp for ski racing's GOAT, Mikaela Shiffrin. Team Shiffrin's emphasis on planning and video analysis impressed Charlie, as did her daily wellness tracking (something we have introduced with GMVS athletes in this year's training phase).

Dan Bell spent the week following our Valle Nevado camp working with Forest Carey and Pete Anderson with USST men's A, B, and C Teams. Dan remarked on the deliberate intent of coaches in organizing, communicating and executing a daily plan, and athletes always being mentally on and mentally engaged.  A personal highlight for Dan was to work a GS session with Ted Ligety and Dan's GMVS classmate Brian McLaughlin. Ted and Brian were in need of a GS session, and Dan was glad to be of help.
