Update from Bishop John Harvey Taylor:
  • It is a blessing to be with the Bishops, Deacons and Priests in the diocese
  • Diaconal Ordination at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 19
  • Diocese wide Eucharist (aka Sunday off for clergy) at 10 a.m. on Sunday, September 20
  • Confirmation guidelines document will be available next week
  • Orange County has approved indoor worship according to guidelines online. No pressure – local experts make local decisions
  • Prayers for the congregations affected by the fires

National elections are 54 days away. We need to manage anxiety and anger. Love, Peace and Justice

  • Parishioners were very divided after 9/11
  • Preach the Gospel – race, language, male, female, lgbtq+ are loved by God, everyone is welcome and treated the same
  • Never talked about who to vote for
  • Talk about need to vote, voice needed and necessary

  • Preaching is a pastoral act
  • Build relationships, best they can be at all times

  • Breaking news from Jamie Barnett: Pray for Compton and surrounding areas as there has been a chemical spill on Rosecrans and Main! They have been asked to remain in their homes!
  • Raise up the importance of Measure J - Reimagine LA on Nov ballot - it is so important (10% LA County resources to mass incarceration, community wellness (housing and homeless) and black and brown businesses.
  • Encourage your congregations to participate in “My Work to Do” with Suzanne Acton-Edwards.
  • Does everyone know about the weekly conference call for worship leaders with the LA County Health Department? Good place to ask questions.
  • I'm using the Voter Network app to make sure everyone is ready to vote in California. Join me and download the app to help your friends register and make a plan to vote.

  • We invited our congregation to view on Zoom the video from the nonpartisan group Reclaim Our Vote with a discussion on the video “Suppression: The Fight To Vote."
  • Besides seeing the video and discussing the video from Reclaim Our Vote, we invited anyone who wanted to join with our Peace and Justice Committee to mail postcards and make calls to give the phone number people can call to see if they are still registered where there is suppression and where polls are still open.

Questions and Answers:
  • Orange County can have inside worship. What is the policy? The best policy is to make the best decision based on diocesan guidelines and state and local guidelines.
  • COVID Question: are we able to use our parish hall to help the Inglewood School System provide space for child care for school age children? Follow appropriate set of guidelines. Check with Canon Serena Beeks.
  • Question (tangentially connected with the election): our parish hall has been used as a polling place in the past. Any COVID concern with us being a polling place this November? This would be appropriate. Follow safety guidelines
  • I have noticed a variety of opinions in our Zoom coffee hour. I have leaned toward letting folks express their views openly and just affirming the points of commonality. I don't want people to feel silenced. How would you lean on this? Allow respectful conversation and interject gospel mandate.
  • Can you generally give us the gist on outdoor baptisms? Or where will we find the guidelines? Small group, masks, gloves if possible, parent holds child. Email will be sent on Monday with the guidelines.

Reminder: Diocese-wide service coming Sept. 20

Bishop Taylor and Canon Kathy O’Connor will offer a diocese-wide virtual worship service on Sunday, Sept. 20, with the express purpose of giving our parochial clergy a break. The service, in English and Spanish, will be live-streamed from St. Paul’s Commons with the support of Provost Frank Alton and the altar guild of St. Athanasius’ Church.
