Dear Laurel Families,
The week was cold, but our hearts were warm all week because we celebrated World Kindness Day on Wednesday! Students in Ms. Nancy’s Executive Function class created a worksheet on which 25 random acts of kindness were listed. Each of our Lower School students is eagerly working toward personally completing these acts of kindness by Thanksgiving. We are sure they are setting a standard that will spread throughout our families and school community. Please ask your children about it!
Mr. Ron Rotunno, a civil engineer who is volunteering his time to work with our students, visited out seventh grade STEM class this morning to advise our students about their Future City Project. The NJ State Future Cities Competition at Rutgers University, will take place on Saturday, January 18. Parents of seventh graders will be receiving more information after Thanksgiving. Please enjoy the pictures of the students working with Mr. Ron this morning.
We are getting ready for the holiday season and Thanksgiving at Laurel School will have a new and exciting look this year! We are hosting a Thanksgiving Celebration for Families, Grandparents and Special Friends on Tuesday, November 26, from 8:15am-11:30am — before we head off for Thanksgiving break. This event will accommodate our whole community, as we have grown so much since our first Thanksgiving celebration as a tiny school in a church basement 7 years ago!
You will receive a special invitation to this event early next week, and we hope that members of your family will participate in our celebration of learning and family. Students, their parents, and grandparents/special visitors will arrive at our usual time. Grandparents/special visitors will be escorted by our Upper School students to the Lower School, to experience lessons taught by their grandchildren in Wilson/Orton Gillingham and Mathematics. At the same time, parents will participate in a
Tea with Dee
to discuss a special topic of interest. We will join together in the gym at 10:00am for a Thanksgiving music presentation and some brunch refreshments to share before our holiday break. We hope you and yours can join us so that we can express our thanks to you!
Please welcome Chase Wolk and his family to Laurel School! Chase is our newest student and is in the sixth grade, Ms. Rebecca’s class. Amy, Wayne, and Chase live in Burlington Township and they are very excited to be part of the Laurel family.
- Please remember to send warmer clothing/extra layers for your students to keep in their lockers for the season. We all go out for recess and want to ensure that the students are warm as they play and get some fresh air.
- Also, please remember to send in snacks if your child likes to have a snack in the morning. We have noticed that fewer students are remembering to bring these, and we have only a few extra snacks available for students who forget now and then.
- Conferences are next week and Laurel teachers are eager to share student progress with you. Please check that you have signed up for conferences or check your schedule online through SignUp.com. If you have any difficulty doing so, please reach out to Alison for assistance. These are half days for the students, so if you need any assistance with child care, please let Alison know so that we can plan accordingly.
Have a wonderful weekend!
