Meet Luca

No matter how unusual, all babies are born adorable!

Luca comes from Ljubljana in the small country of Slovenia. As I was rounding a corner on a cold rainy but beautiful day, I saw him in a store window quietly breaking out of his ancient egg. Almost no one noticed this long-awaited event, but I did and knew he was mine.

I said to myself privately, “If ever we needed a powerful dragon with a code of ethics, now is the time.”

Dragons have a bad rap in western cultures. They are often seen as evil and a force to be destroyed or conquered...similar to how Nature is often seen. Dragons also pull for the usual fear-based myopia so regularly placed on anyone, anything, or any idea, that is different. However, in many eastern cultures dragons are a sign of good fortune, wisdom, balance, protection, authority, and harmony. Luca is from this latter lineage, and he carries the epigenetics of all lived experience.

And he is expected.

I have been musing on his destiny as his skills are obvious even at this young age. When he senses cruelty, he triples in size, narrows his eyes to one intent, and makes a low hissing flame that takes the breath right out of those in the vicinity.

Luca can melt into the arms of love, and his smile melts the heart. But he seems to have a particular agitation around deception, disinformation, dishonesty, delusion, and distortion. He somehow knows already that Truth was seriously wounded in this last episode.

Last night, he was snugly tucked around my head when I fell asleep. But I awoke to hearing a strange new sound coming from my study. There were also colored lights flicking here and there like the sparklers we used to have as children. I peeked around the corner to see Luca with a newly developed laser intensity engraving a message:

Stand, Join, Speak

I thought, what in the world is this? But I began to see how fast Luca was developing and thought about enrolling him in early 2nd grade at this point. But then I worried about the curriculum as some of the most important subjects like history, civics, and thinking skills have been eliminated. Since I just got back from his birthplace and Northern Italy where guide after guide emphasized the histories of each country, I was disquieted with how this conqueror or that tyrant affected the lives of the population. If Luca couldn't learn history, how would be understand where he came from? How could be evaluate his or others' experience? How could be fully know himself?

I continued to think about these concerns and remembered that on the trip, I visited a palace outside Padua. The palace was built in the 18th century for the former massively rich entrepreneur named Pisani who was the Doge of Venice (…seriously…doge). He ran out of money according to Wikipedia and our guide because of gambling. So he sold the palace to Napoleon who didn’t particularly feel comfortable in the 114-room palace so remodeled it for an important meeting between Hilter and Mussolini.

Apparently, Hilter and Mussolini did meet in that special remodeled room but left abruptly because they couldn’t understand each other’s language (an important detail somehow missed during the opulent overgrowth). So Hilter not speaking Italian and Mussolini not speaking German simply huffed off...perhaps bombing a few cities or killing a few prisoners to handle the shame.

This is another reason I want the right education for Luca. I want him to be able to think for himself, turn over suspicious rocks to see what crawls out. I don't want him to be confused by a slick mouth with a large signature. I want him to understand the roots of thoughts, feelings, and decisions. I want Luca to keep his deep connections to the Earth.

I went back to bed quietly thinking about the care of Luca. Another urgent issue is his size. He is growing so fast right before my eyes that I’ll soon need to add on to the house. His growth is accelerating in every area too and of course, he is now writing in fire…WOW!

Before I drifted off again, I thought about having him watch The White Lotus so he could see how individual lives with hidden corruptions, lies, ancient hurts, vacuous goals, and longing hearts can explosively intersect with the feelings of those harmed. But, I thought, there is way too much suggestive nudity and bawdy sex scenes that are not appropriate for his developmental level...I can just have him read the New York Times.

There is something about Luca though that feels dangerous. Maybe it’s his growing size or maybe it’s his intent. He also seems to have developed an eerie 'stealth' skill as he can silently and suddenly be near. He was born with a purpose; I know it now. My only job is to love him, guide him if needed as to the ways of this world, and watch him right it.

We, and all of our Children need this.

NCAR is delighted to bring a bit of our world to others and is sending Notes on a monthly basis. Each Note focuses on some aspect on the Neuroscience of Attachment that applies to all of us and is the specialization of NCAR. Notes build on each other and involve key concepts used in Integrative Regulation Therapy (iRT: Newton, 2009-2025), a neurobiological subcortical scaffolding for depth therapies. Feel free to forward to others.
