Dear Dewberry School of Music Family,

During this season of Thanksgiving, we welcome a milestone; our 100th issue of Notes from the Director! Our first issue was July of 2016 when I was honored to become the Director of our School of Music. My goal has been to showcase the excellence of our beloved Dewberry School of Music students and faculty with the George Mason University community, our School of Music alumni and supporters, and our wonderful Friends of Music at Mason. We thank you for embarking on this journey with us and for joining us for special music concerts and events. We look forward to the next 100 issues as our Dewberry School of Music students and faculty continue to inspire through the gift of music!

We are excited to showcase our Brass Area this weekend with Trombone Choir, Brass Ensemble, and Brass Instrument Days (Tuba/Euphonium Day, Trombone Day, and Trumpet Day)! We are also looking forward to featuring our brass, woodwinds, and percussion students in the upcoming Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band Concerts.

Mark your calendars for upcoming jazz concerts next week, including Mason Jazz Vocal Night on November 15th and Mason Jazz Combos on November 18th. Please join us on Saturday, November 20 at 8 pm for the 20th anniversary concert of Jazz4Justice with a musical tribute to Duke Ellington! We are thrilled to have Provost Mark Ginsberg as our guest conductor! Proceeds from Jazz4Justice benefit Legal Services of Northern Virginia to continue its mission of service to the Northern Virginia community as well as providing financial support for the Mason Jazz Studies Area. Please note the special invitation to Mason Jazz Alumni for a pre-concert Happy Hour on November 20th!

Mason Opera is proud to present Cendrillon by Pauline Viardot on November 19, 20, and 21 at the Hylton Performing Arts Center.  Cendrillon is a charming, comical, and lyric telling of the Cinderella story with a distinctly French flair! Viardot's works are being rediscovered and enjoyed in the light of her remarkable career as a celebrated 19th century female composer, singer, and pianist. Please do not miss this opportunity to hear our Mason Opera students at the Hylton next weekend!

At this joyful season of Thanksgiving, please know that I feel truly grateful for each of you and for your support of our wonderful Mason music students. I wish each of you a very happy Thanksgiving filled with memorable music as you are surrounded by family and friends.
