Kudos to Mason Music Faculty and MCAA for Amazing Summer Camps
Over 100 middle and high school students participated in the inaugural Mason Summer Band Camp on June 19-23 founded by Dr. William L. Lake, Jr., Director of Mason Concert Bands. Dr. Michael Nickens (Doc Nix), Director of Mason Athletic Bands and Dr. LaToya A. Webb, Director of Laurier Wind Orchestra and Mason Alumna collaborated with Dr. Lake and Mason Community Arts Academy. Students selected day camp or overnight residential camp on Mason's Fairfax campus and attended masterclasses, Health and Wellness activities, music electives, and social evening activities. The Junior and Senior Bands performed at an End-of-Camp Concert joined by Mason's Green Machine.
Mason Jazz Camp hosted over 60 students from June 19-23 under the leadership of Prof. John Kocur, Dr. Darden Purcell, and Prof. Jim Carroll. Participants of all levels enrolled in this intensive and inclusive program took classes on improvisation, jazz theory, ear training, composition, arranging and jazz history. Mason Jazz Camp offered daily free performances including the US Army Blues, Mike Kamuf Little Big Band, Special Guest Warren Wolf, Mason Jazz Camp Faculty and a Student Showcase.

Mason Community Arts Academy Instruments in the Attic
Article written by Dr. Samantha Clarke; Edited by Regina Schneider
| |
"On April 28, 2023, Instruments in the Attic (IiA) was able to provide over 100 instruments and accessories to middle and high school students in Wynne, Arkansas. Matthew Cooper, a middle school music teacher in Wynne Schools, reached out to Samantha Clarke (IiA Coordinator) earlier this academic year seeking instruments for the program. Cooper had learned about and received instruments from IiA in the past when he was teaching in Maryland, so he sought help from the program again in his current job. In the midst of coordinating the details of the instrument pick-up and school needs, the Wynne community faced an unimaginable tragedy: on March 31, their town was struck by a massive tornado."
