You are invited to an alumni concert this Sunday, August 27 showcasing compositions of Juan Megna (DMA 2021) and his upcoming album, funded in part by Dr. Megna’s win of the 2023 Young Alumni Commissioning Award from Mason’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) Young Alumni Commissioning Project.
Join us for a spectacular opening of our 2023 Fall Concert season with a Grand Piano Celebration on Sunday, September 10 at 3 p.m. in Mason's Center for the Arts. This concert honors Mason's All-Steinway School. Exciting and dramatic solo piano, duo-piano, and collaborative piano masterworks will be performed by faculty and student artists. Mason's faculty piano ensemble (8 hands) will also be showcased! In addition, Prof. Jennifer Casey Cabot, soprano; Dr. Kathleen Mulcahy, clarinet; and Dr. Dennis Edelbrock, trumpet will be featured.

We are thrilled to feature our Mason Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band concert on Tuesday, September 26. Join us for a spectacular opening of our 2023 Fall Concert season with A Grand Piano Celebration on Sunday, September 10 at 3 p.m. in Mason's Center for the Arts.
This concert honors Mason's All-Steinway School. Outstanding student and faculty artists of the Reva and Sid Dewberry Family School of Music at George Mason University will be on stage to display their marvelous talents. The concert will be led by Dr. Linda Apple Monson, International Steinway Artist and Director of the Dewberry School of Music. She will be joined on stage by Mason faculty artists including Dr. Dennis Edelbrock, trumpet; Dr. Anna Balakerskaia, duo-piano; Dr. John Healey, piano ensemble; Dr. Eunae Ko Han, piano ensemble; Prof. Jennifer Casey Cabot, soprano; and Dr. Kathleen Mulcahy, clarinet. Exciting and dramatic solo piano, duo-piano works, and collaborative piano works will be performed. Mason's faculty piano ensemble (8 hands) will also be showcased!

Symphonic Band Concert: "FUSION"

The Mason Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band will present its first concert titled FUSION, on Tuesday, September 26 at 8 pm in the Center for the Arts Concert Hall. This concert celebrates the unique ways artists draw inspiration from different sources to create a masterpiece that goes beyond its parts.
Featured works on this concert include Scott McAllister’s "Black Dog" featuring Professor of Clarinet, Dr. Kathleen Mulcahy. Inspired by the music of Led Zeppelin and Yasuhide Ito’s Gloriosa, this work is a symphonic poem fusing Gregorian chant and Japanese folk music.
The Mason Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band are excited to welcome the Fairfax Wind Symphony, a Fairfax, VA-based community band directed by Stan Schoonover, to share the Center for the Arts stage for this season opener.

Save the date for the annual ARTS by George! on Saturday, September 30, 2023! This annual benefit event supports student scholarships at George Mason University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts, Mason Community Arts Academy, Green Machine Ensembles, and the Great Performances at Mason season at the Center for the Arts.
The evening begins by showcasing the remarkable talents of Mason arts students amid an array of spectacular food and beverages, and culminates with an exciting headliner performance of Renée Elise Goldsberry, best known for her Tony Award-winning portrayal of Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton in the Center for the Arts Concert Hall.

Welcome New Adjunct Faculty | |
Award-winning cellist, Ismar Gomes, has performed internationally as a chamber musician, and soloist. Hailed for his “impressive virtuosity, energy, and a handsome tonal range” (Berkshire Review), he has established himself as a captivating young artist, delivering exciting and innovative performances.
Recent appearances have taken Dr. Gomes to four continents including performances at the Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival, Evolution Contemporary Music Series, Le Petit Salon, Luan Huan Shan Glades Music Festival, Early Music at St. Mark’s, and many more. His recent chamber music collaborators include members of the Pittsburgh and Baltimore Symphonies, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, as well as members of the Johannes, and Brentano Quartets. Also in demand as an orchestral player, Dr. Gomes was the Baltimore Symphony’s Fellow for the 2015 – 2016 season, and is a member of both the Virginia and Richmond Symphonies.
Teaching is a central component in Dr. Gomes’ musical life. He has recently been appointed as Adjunct Applied Professor of Cello at George Mason University. He has previously taught at Luther College, Gettysburg College, Johns Hopkins University, and Washington Adventist University. He was formerly faculty and guest artist for StringFest at Merkin Hall, Performing Arts Institute at Wyoming Seminary, CIM Summer Chamber Music, and Young Artist at the Three Bridges International Music Festival – he is currently a Faculty Artist at the Rushmore Music Festival, the Baltimore International Piano Festival, and CelloSpeak. Dr. Gomes has recently been invited to present masterclasses at several universities including Georgetown, Towson, Ball State, and Duke. His students have been invited to perform in masterclasses for major artists, and have been accepted to many of the top Festivals and Conservatories around the world.
