Dear School of Music students, faculty, alumni, and friends, 

Congratulations to our Class of 2017 Graduates! What an incredibly exciting College of Visual and Performing Arts Degree Celebration we enjoyed yesterday afternoon in our Center for the Arts.  We are extremely proud of our 76 School of Music Graduates, including 23 earning Bachelor of Arts in Music degrees, 30 earning Bachelor of Music degrees, 19 earning Master of Music degrees, 2 earning Doctor of Musical Arts degrees, and 2 earning PhD in Music Education degrees. It is with particular pride and pleasure that we welcome four new doctors of music to our company of scholars: Angela Ammerman, PhD in Music Education; Timothy Smith, PhD in Music Education; Mark Jenkins, Doctor of Musical Arts, and William Davidson Porter II, Doctor of Musical Arts.  

On behalf of our entire School of Music faculty and staff, we salute and celebrate our amazing Class of 2017 Mason Music graduates!

Faculty Excellence
Dr. Michael Nickens:
The Earle C. Williams Medal for Excellence in Social Impact
Professor Michael W. Nickens, director of the Green Machine pep band, an avid tuba player, and now the winner of the Earle C. Williams Medal for Excellence in Social Impact, says teaching at the university level is a way to accomplish many things.  Read more.
Dr. Jesse Guessford:
OSCAR Mentoring Excellence Award
The purpose of the OSCAR Mentoring Excellence Award is to recognize and reward outstanding Mason community members who mentor undergraduate students on research and creative activities and who foster a culture of student scholarship in support of Mason's  Students as Scholars  initiative.
Dr. Emily Green: Mathy Junior Faculty Award in the Arts and Humanities
The Mathy Junior Faculty Awards in the Arts and Humanities are given jointly by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Visual and Performing Arts. These awards are designed to help promising junior faculty to become published scholars or active artists in their early years at George Mason University.
