Dear Mason Music Family,
We are very proud of our Mason International Teaching Scholars who represented our School of Music so beautifully in Costa Rica for two weeks this summer. My deep thanks goes to Professor John Kilkenny, Director of Percussion, and Libby Curtis, Director of Potomac Academy for their incredible work in making our Mason Music/Costa Rica Initiative a reality. Our School of Music is buzzing with wonderful musical activity this week with our Potomac Academy Ovations String Camp directed by Professor Glen Dewey and Mason Music alumna Alex Morrison. We are also pleased to host the National Jazz Workshop at Mason this week where seventy young jazz musicians are taught by our stellar Mason jazz faculty. We are planning an amazing lineup of very special concerts for our School of Music 2017-18 academic year. Our concert season will kick off on Sunday, September 17 with our Grand Piano Celebration at 3 pm in the Center for the Arts. We hope you will plan to be a part of our School of Music celebrations throughout the year!
Warm regards,
Dr. Linda A. Monson
Director, School of Music

"I have experienced firsthand how music can build trust, respect, and even friendships, while crossing over cultural and language barriers. As I set out from Mason with my music education degree, I hope to continue to use music as a means to create and build relationships with people across the globe and to help others discover the power of music through community using music education." Prof. John Kilkenny, Director of Percussion

"Nearly three years ago I visited Costa Rica for the first time, taking a group of Mason percussionists to perform and teach at the central conservatory of music in San Jose. During that visit I first learned in detail about a program called SINEM. This system for music education developed by the Ministry of Culture for the country of Costa Rica is a fascinating experiment in the use of music as a vehicle for community development and personal growth."

"[Day Violins] went to work and in less than two days repaired, polished and transformed 45 instruments into 'almost new' condition... Those 45 instruments, along with the 50 we shipped down from our Instruments in the Attic Donation Program (which will be used in various outreach locations), means almost 100 more Costa Rican children can now experience the joy of music! It was an extraordinary two weeks!" Read more.

"I cannot recall having a more musically and personally satisfying guest conducting engagement than the one I recently experienced with Costa Rica's premiere
Banda de Conciertos de San Jose
at the Museo Nacional de Costa Rica. It was a great honor to be invited to lead such a first-rate professional ensemble in rehearsals and performance. Their musical excellence, personal warmth and spirit of cooperation was extraordinary." Read more.

Mentoring Project for
Composers and Conductors
|
|
Professor Mark Camphouse served as host, coordinator, and composition mentor for the National Band Association Young Composer-Conductor Mentor Project, June 13-16. Camphouse conceived the Project in 2000. It convenes every other year. 3 outstanding young composers and 3 outstanding young conductors are selected from a large national pool of applicants who come to study over an intensive 4-day period with 3 leading composer and 3 leading conductor mentors who donate their professional services for this tuition-free enterprise. (Mason music professor Anthony Maiello served as a conducting mentor). Project seminars, lessons, and masterclasses were held in Mason School of Music facilities. Rehearsals, performance, and recording sessions were held at Joint Base Anacostia Boling with the Project's 2017 ensemble-in-residence, the famed United States Air Force Band.

The Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Achievement Award was presented to Dr. Joanne Haroutounian as founder and Executive Director of the MusicLink Foundation at the 2017 MTNA National Convention in Baltimore MD in March. This award is the highest honor conferred by the MTNA Board of Directors to those who have made significant and lasting contributions to music and music making. It is only the second time the award has been given to an organization. MTNA Executive Director, Gary Ingles states: “It was me that MusicLink was one of the most important programs in music teaching. It has been a pleasure to watch the program grow under Dr. Haroutounian’s vision and leadership and to see it benefit thousands of at-risk and needy children across the country.”
