What tremendous joy we experienced last weekend with five performances of the Gilbert & Sullivan's
Gondoliers
production in Mason's Center for the Arts! Our Mason Symphony Orchestra provided a wonderfully full and rich orchestral tapestry for the talented singers and actors on stage. We are thrilled for the collaborative efforts between the School of Theater and the School of Music to provide such amazing and memorable performance opportunities for our students (see photos below). We are grateful for the gift of an extensive
Gilbert and Sullivan collection
to the Fenwick Library by Friends of Music supporters David and Annabelle Stone; their gift sparked an entire year of G&S activity at Mason! We have many exciting musical events planned for the upcoming weeks and we do hope you will join us. Charles Ives and the Ragtime Topic

Dr. Owens examines Ives’s use of Ragtime as borrowed material and as a style. Building on Peter Burkholder’s application of topic theory to Ives’s works, he will show how Ives uses Ragtime to create specific musical affects in a variety of contexts throughout his career. Pieces analyzed include “Walking,” “The New River,” Central Park in the Dark, the first and second piano sonatas, and the Four Ragtime Dances.

Inside Look
The Mason Jazz Ensemble, directed by Jim Carroll, collaborates with the law community to present its annual benefit concert, Jazz 4 Justice™. Proceeds from this performance support vital community efforts by the Bar Foundation and the George Mason University Jazz Studies Department.
The theme for this year’s concert is "Woody, Bird and Diz." The music comes out of the Swing era and moves us into the Bebop era, the "common practice" period in Jazz. America has produced some of the greatest musicians the world has ever heard, including Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie... "Bird and Diz." Woody was a bridge between the Big Band period and Bebop. He featured Charlie Parker on "Bird with the Herd" and Dizzy wrote "Woody N' You" for Herman. This performance includes favorites from these three legends including "Four Brothers," "Manteca," "Anthropology," "Woodchoppers Ball," "Fanfare for the Common Man," "Woody N' You," and more.

Join us for a wonderful afternoon of vocal pop music presented by two Mason a cappella groups, Soundcheque and Mason Some Noise! This concert features jazz standards such as “Birdland,” by Manhattan Transfer and Paul Simon’s blues chart, “She Loves Me Like a Rock,” by The New York Voices. Other new A Cappella arrangements by the group members will also be featured!

The music student organizations of George Mason University (Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha, and Sigma Alpha Iota) will perform a concert in support of the hurricane relief efforts. In light of the recent tragedies, many students felt there was an opportunity to use their talents to serve those in need. Students and faculty have prepared performances with a wide variety of instrumentation, genres, and backgrounds to contribute to the cause. Your purchase of a ticket goes directly to Habitat for Humanity and will help the victims of hurricanes.

Join us for an evening of of music dedicated to Jazz Vocals! Performances by Mason Jazz Studio soloists and the Mason Jazz Vocal Ensemble, directed by Dr. Darden Purcell and special guests, Herndon High School Jazz Choir, directed by Dana Van Slyke and Jim Van Slyke. This performance will debut six world premieres by the Mason Jazz Vocal Ensemble in preparation for their Jazz Education Network (JEN) performance in January!

Recipients of NAMM President's Innovation Award

Congratulations to Kyotaro Terai and Talha Mirza!
- Kyotaro Terai is a senior in music technology and runs his own company called Campus Artist Promotions. He is president of the Mason Noise student organization.
- Talha Mirza is a junior music education major. He is treasurer of the Mason Noise student organization and teaches guitar for the Potomac Arts Academy.
The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation has recognized outstanding university music students with the organization’s prestigious President’s Innovation Award. This year, two Mason School of Music students were awarded with this honor. The annual award provides outstanding college music students exploring a career in music education, music business and/or music products a stipend to attend The 2018 NAMM Conference in Anaheim, CA, the annual global music products tradeshow.
