Dear Mason School of Music family,

We hope you will join us for our Mason Symphony Orchestra concert this upcoming Monday night, March 4th at 8 pm in our Center for the Arts Concert Hall. This is a very special concert featuring six outstanding soloists that have been chosen by competitive audition in our annual Concerto Competition. This will be a stunning concert that you will not want to miss!

Our Mason Music Global Connections continue with a recent wonderful performance by our Steel Pan Ensemble in Trinidad! Under the direction of Victor Provost, Steel Pan virtuoso and Mason alumnus, our Mason Steel Pan Ensemble was chosen to perform in a renowned festival held in Trinidad and Tobago! Our special thanks is extended to Mason's Global Discovery Program (through the Provost's Office and the Global Education Office) for their support of this global experience.

Kudos to our outstanding Jazz Studies Area for the recent feature article in Downbeat magazine. Special congratulations to Dr. Darden Purcell, Prof. Jim Carroll, Dr. Matt Niess, and all members of our jazz faculty!

We hope to see you at our many upcoming concerts, masterclasses, and daytime departmental recitals. We love sharing our music with you!  Finally, please save the date of Saturday, May 4th, for our School of Music gala event A Musical Feast! This will be a a truly special night of extraordinary music-making by our talented School of Music student artists!

Warm regards,
Dr. Linda A. Monson

This past weekend, our University Choirs and visiting ensemble, The Youth Jazz Orchestra of North Rhine-Westphalia, gave a wonderful performance of Ellington's Sacred Concert. In addition, they performed the work at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage and the historic New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C.
Recently nine steel pan students from Mason's School of Music traveled to Trinidad to participate in the National Panorama Competition, one of the world's largest and most extravagant steel pan competitions. The students explored the island, learned about the culture, and attended classes, lessons, and workshops at the University of Trinidad and Tobago.
