Dear Brothers,
Diaconate Ordination
It seems that I accidently gave the wrong date for the Diaconate Ordination. The ordination will be Saturday, January 11, 2020, in Rome at the General Administration Chapel. Let us join ourselves in prayer with
Bros. Michael Chiuri,
Brandon Paluch and
Renny Markose. Please

A Spirit of Gratitude
As we continue in this season of Advent, I have been
trying to continue to celebrate life in a spirit of thanksgiving. Thanksgiving to God for the gift of life, my family, my friends, my vocation and the call to the serve the Province. I invite you to join me in spending a little extra time in the chapel during this Advent season. Let us give thanks to God for our Province, our wonderful ministries and, as the Marianist Dedication Prayer states, “the many holy Marianists that have gone before us.”
This Coming Week
- December 12–13: St. Mary’s University, preside at the Baccalaureate Mass
- December 16–18: Provincial Council, Mount Saint John, Dayton

Relics of Sts. Damien de Veuster and Marianne Cope
|
Recently
Fr. Oscar Vasquez
and I were in Honolulu for meetings and we visited the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace. We were given a private tour of the recent renovations and had an opportunity to pray for our Marianists in Hawaii before the relics of Fr. Damien and Sr. Marianne, two extraordinary persons who ministered among the lepers on the island of Molokai.

Dear Brothers,
A Video Celebrating our Bicentenary
Part of the celebration for the bicentenary at Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco was the creation of a video honoring our Marianist history in education. The telecasts are described as “info-comedic” to keep the 700 boys enrolled at the school engaged. The first half of the video is on the bicentenary but I suggest you watch it in its entirety. You may get a chuckle out of it. Thanks to Archbishop Riordan and to all our schools for their creative expression in honoring our 200 Years in Marianist Education. Enjoy!
Watch the video.

Dear Brothers,
Advent Resource on Mary and Nonviolence
Welcome to another monthly installment of our JPIC Resource for Marianist Communities. We invite you to delve deeper into the spirituality of justice, peace and integrity of creation, both individually and communally. This month, we hope you are enjoying this sacred season of Advent. As
Fr. John Dear says in his recent monthly podcast, "Advent is a beautiful, quiet, holy season of peace and hope. It's a good time to get ready to celebrate the birth of the nonviolent Jesus." Fr. John further reflects on Luke's Gospel, with a particular focus on Mary, and he invites listeners to explore three movements of nonviolence according to Luke's reflection of Mary.

MSJC Issue Team Opportunity
The Death Penalty Abolition and Restorative Justice team seeks a Society of Mary representative to participate in their important work. This issue team advocates for the abolition of the death penalty and the greater use of restorative justice processes. They engage in this work because of the important connection with our Marianist charism regarding the dignity of the human person and the use of restorative justice as a community-centered approach to justice that repairs harm and fosters healing. They collaborate with Catholic Mobilizing Network (CMN), a national organization that mobilizes Catholics to end the use of the death penalty, to promote restorative practices. CMN works with bishops, state Catholic Conferences, Catholic dioceses, religious communities and other partner organizations.
The team meets in-person annually and has conference calls every four months. We educate, advocate and provide opportunities to invite the Marianist Family to programs and presentations in order to learn directly from those who advocate for restorative justice practices and against the death penalty. Please contact
Sarah Gray if you're interested in joining this team or attending a future program.
