In Thanksgiving
I received a thank you from our Marianist Brothers in Mexico for the prayers we all offered for them. Click here to see the customary group photo taken at the end of the annual retreat for our two communities in Mexico. The retreat was held in Queretaro at the San José del Buen Consejo retreat center.
Visiting our Care Centers
If you will be visiting any of our Care Center Communities, please remember that each community adjusts the expectations for visitors (even for brothers.) The expectations change as the virus changes in the local area. Please follow the guidelines. If you are not sure, please check with the community director.
Click here for the current policy rules at Cupertino. The safety of our brothers and staff is very important to us. Remember that currently, if you are visiting Cupertino, you must submit your vaccination card before arrival.
Update on the General Leadership Assembly (GLA)
Bro. Bernie and I arrived safely in Rome on Saturday, July 9, for the GLA meeting. The trip went smoothly. We arrived as the meeting of the Superiors for the Developing Units was ending. We all gathered for our meetings beginning Sunday evening at 6. Bernie and I have taped a short video to give you a sense of our time at the meetings. Watch our video update. Dear Brothers,
It is with great joy that we welcome two new members to the Office of Education.

We are delighted to welcome Hazel Franco, our new administrative assistant for the Office of Leadership Development, Research and Partnerships. Hazel met the Marianists in Bangalore, India and is a graduate of the University of Dayton with a master’s degree in Theological Studies in association with the International Marian Research Institute.
Hazel begins her ministry on July 18 from Dayton, Ohio, helping to advance the Marianist Family Encounter Project by administering its website and assisting in creating formation materials for Mary’s Lead and our boards.

Welcome also to Mary Theresa Holtmann, our new administrative assistant for the Office of Sponsorship. Mary started work on July 5 at the West Pine offices in St. Louis. She comes to us from St. Louis University, where she worked in the student health center and medical records.
Mary is a native St. Louisan (Cor Jesu Academy) and has been happily married to her husband Jim for almost 32 years. They have two grown sons – Drew, who teaches theology in Omaha, NE, and Ben, who is in the police academy. Mary is the youngest of six children; two are diocesan priests.

Association of Marianist Universities Symposium
Submitted by Bro. Tom Giardino
“What was beneficial to me was the opportunity to see the Marianist Charism manifested by three universities. Also, the congruence between words and actions related to Marianist characteristics at the highest levels.”
That was the response of one of the participants at the symposium sponsored by the Association of Marianist Universities, which took place in St. Louis, Missouri, June 14 – 16. The theme of the event was “The Promise of Marianist University Education: Engaging a World in Crisis.”
More than 100 participants, nominated from the three Marianist universities (Chaminade, St. Mary’s, UD), along with speakers from Saint Louis University and guests from the Marianist General Administration in Rome and the Provincialate, attended.
Three critical goals were established to guide the symposium program and evaluate the event’s success.
- To sustain and promote the Marianist mission, identity and culture through facilitating a cooperative environment within and among our universities for the exchange of experiences and information
- To provide mission-relevant opportunities and resources to faculty, staff and administrators to foster lay and academic leadership
- To inspire vocational exploration by enhancing participants’ personal and professional goals and aspirations as educators at a Catholic Marianist university in service to students, the academy, the Church and society at large
I am grateful for the support of the Provincial Council, the AMU Board and a talented steering committee, all of whom helped make the time together “promising” for the future of our Marianist educational charism. As another participant put it, “The spirit among the attendees was enouraging, and it was clear that people benefited from each other’s presence and a compelling program.”

Office of Vocation Ministry - Bro. Mark Motz
|
|
Dear Brothers,
Vocation Refresher
“The demands of daily life prepare one’s response to the more defining calls of one’s life, those which commit to the long term. Each choice is a part of a response given, little by little, according to one’s surroundings, enlightened by conscience and God. Human life is an ongoing series of choices, the more important ones building upon the more ad hoc ones, or eliciting them.” (Fostering New Vocations, P. 26)
How can we help others become aware of their daily choices and consequences? And how can we gradually move them towards more definitive choices?
