Dear Brothers,

District of India planning moves forward

The Strategic Planning Committee for the District of India met with Bros. Dennis Schmitz, Bernie Ploeger and me Dec. 29 - Jan. 5. The meetings were long, but the exchanges were positive and productive.

After gathering comments from the second District consultation in November, Bernie did a superb job in leading the process, resulting in a five-year plan for the growth and development of the District of India.

Echoing the title of Fr. Manuel Cortés' recent circular, the plan is called "To Know, Love and Serve - A Five Year Plan for the Re-founding of Marianist Life and Mission in India." This document will be reviewed by the District Council and endorsed by the District Chapter before being unveiled at the District Assembly in June. It will be the mandate for the new District leadership that will assume service during the assembly. I will also share this work with the Provincial Chapter in March.

Thanks to Bernie for his generous service, to Dennis for his continued visiting of all communities of the District, and to the Nirmal Deep Community for its excellent hospitality.

First jubilee of 2017

On the last evening of our meetings, the Marianists in and around Ranchi gathered at the novitiate to celebrate Bernie's, Dennis' and my golden jubilees. Bro. Sukrit Tirkey, who's celebrating his silver jubilee this year, was also honored.

We began with a celebration of the Eucharist, at the end of which each jubilarian reflected briefly upon his Marianist vocation. This was followed by a festive reception and dinner.

Being in India and assisting the District in plans for its future seemed like a fitting way to celebrate this happy milestone.

30,000 calls for Mary

In his Christmas card to me, Bro. Joe Barrett said he had just completed 30,000 phone calls as part of our "ministry of gratitude" program.

As you may know, Joe calls those who have supported the Marianist Mission and our Join Her Mission campaign to thank them for their generosity. After 20,000 calls, Joe was experiencing pain pushing the phone buttons, so we were able to get him a voice-activated phone. When he reaches 40,000 calls, we're going to have a big celebration with him. Thanks, Joe, for your continued zeal and sense of mission.

Puerto Rico and other destinations

The Provincial Council meets in Puerto Rico this week and will participate in the Founder's Day celebrations of Colegio San José in the presence of the bicentennial icon. A number of us will then take part in the UD board retreat in Florida.

Following that, I will visit the two communities in southern California: the Lalanne Community at University Park and the Chaminade West Hills Community. Although typical January weather has been predicted for St. Louis, these visits to warmer climes are purely coincidental.

Thanks to the many communities and members of the Province who sent Christmas greetings to the Provincial Council. We appreciate your kindness and rely upon your prayerful support. You have ours as well.

Dear Brothers,

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Jan. 18-25

Each January, we as a worldwide Christian church are encouraged to promote efforts for Christian unity.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity originated with the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement (Graymoor Friars). The Friars have a cherished history regarding this important celebration.

This year marks the 500th anniversary of the beginnings of the Reformation. The theme "Reconciliation - The Love of Christ Compels Us" (2 Corinthians 5:14-20) has been selected in consideration of this anniversary. Find more resources here.

If you're curious about the Atonement Friars connection to the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, learn more here.

Dear Brothers,

"What am I doing when I do what I do?"

Thanks to our youngest brother, Justin Quiroz, for his submission to this series on our roles as Marianist religious.

"By teaching religion and technology, I feel that I am helping students to learn about the person that is Jesus. However, I believe that I am also imparting a radical new way of how they might understand and look at the world along with an understanding of who God is for them in their own lives.

"I like to think of my classroom as being a place that challenges students to extend their learning beyond the classroom into their homes and neighborhoods.

"One of the most rewarding lessons I can recall is teaching 7th graders how to live out mercy and forgiveness in a world that can seem very chaotic at times. In this discussion with the students, I learned from them about their experiences of growing up in Baltimore and then I tried to help them to grasp how they can live mercy and forgiveness in their communities.

"For me, ministry is about more than the academic; it's about helping the students to live out the Gospels to their fullest ability and to explore what their relationship to God and each other really is. I am proud to be a Marianist Brother teaching in a school and being able to share my gifts and the gifts of our congregation with the students at Mother Seton Academy."

Dear Brothers,

Building peace

In his message for the 50th World Day of Peace on Jan. 1, Pope Francis urged families, faith communities, government leaders and the international community to practice nonviolence and work to build peace. U.S. Bishops release report to promote peace, end racism

The USCCB's Special Task Force to Promote Peace in Our Communities has released a written version of its findings and recommendations for bishops to continue the vital work of fostering healing and lasting peace.

The report's recommendations focus on prayer, local dialogues, parish-based and internal diocesan conversation and training, and empowering communities to identify and address challenges. Read the report.

As we approach Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 16), you may find the report helpful in your local work to address racism. You can find additional resources on the USCCB racism page.
