Project Before & After

Route 45 & 26 - Centre County

BEFORE

AFTER

The project included reconstruction, widening, and signal improvements to the intersection of State Routes 0026 and 0045 in Centre County, PA, and replacing an existing bridge with a 39’-0”’ span P/S concrete adjacent box beam superstructure on concrete abutments. The overall project included 2,932’ of approach roadway and intersection improvements. A temporary road was used to maintain traffic during construction allowing the new structure to be built on the existing alignment. Keller Engineers’ transportation team provided preliminary design, final design, and construction services.

Groundbreaking

Replacing the Historic Red Mill Bridge

The project involves replacing the historic Pratt Through Truss bridge with a 98’-6” P/S concrete I-beam bridge. The former structure was in serious condition and had been closed to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic for an extended period. An analysis by Keller Engineers and PennDOT determined it could not be rehabilitated; therefore, a new bridge was needed.

During design of the new bridge, the north abutment of the Pratt Through Truss bridge failed, endangering the remaining portion of the structure. An emergency contract was issued for the culturally sensitive removal and storage of the existing truss until a new owner can be found.

Due to the historic nature of the Pratt Through Truss bridge the new bridge, when stained, will appear to be made from mortared stone, and alternate railings across the bridge will have a more natural look. Overall, the project has a total length of 575’ which includes roadway and drainage improvements to both bridge approaches.
