Because now and forever:
THERE IS NOTHING WITHOUT US
Thank you to everyone who showed up and to the organizers for the ADA35 NYC March for Disability Justice this past Saturday at Washington Square Park. We rallied with urgency, joy, and power to demand full ADA enforcement—no cuts to Medicaid, no cuts to Medicare, and we must be a part of every conversation that shapes our future.
The voices leading this movement were as diverse and powerful as the community itself: : Author Siri Hustvedt, president of Disabled in Action New York Jean Ryan, disability rights activist Sasha Blair-Goldensohn, Exec. Dir. of Center for Independence for the Disabled Dr. McLennon Wier, founder of the NYC Mental Health Collective Christina Sparrock, founder/CEO of the Axis Project - Access Initiatives, George Gallego, disability activist and author Nadina LaSpina, photojournalist/activist Lyssy Pastrana, trans and disability rights activist Lou Hill, and a representative from CWA Local 1180 spoke.
Each spoke not only to the legacy of the ADA, but to the ongoing fight for inclusion, justice, and recognition that disability justice is intersectional, collective, and essential.
If you missed the rally, you can [view photos here] and [here] and [watch the livestream here] via Disability Unite—and don’t miss our next event, a night of laughter and truth-telling this Thursday!
The fight continues—and we’re just getting started.

“For 35 years, the ADA has protected the rights of one in four Americans living with disabilities—and it safeguards the future for everyone, because disability touches us all.
We’re not just here to celebrate an anniversary. We’re here to protest the ongoing rollbacks to our rights.
And guess what?
We are not going back.”
— Sasha Blair-Goldensohn

“Every time you get on a train or bus and hear an announcement—that’s the ADA.
Every time you visit a Starbucks, Walmart, or Target and see a family restroom—that’s the ADA.
Every time you download a book on Audible or check out an accessible book at the library—that’s the ADA.
When you go to a museum and use a headset to hear the stories behind the art—that’s the ADA.
So many things have changed because of the ADA—and guess what?
All of us benefit.”
— Dr. McLennon Wier

“Every policy. Every budget. Every decision. Whether or not it mentions disability—impacts us.
Transportation, housing, education, public safety, healthcare—It’s all about us.
We are not a sidebar to society.
We are the society.
So if you’re planning for the public and we’re not in the room?
Start over.
Because now and forever:
There is nothing without us.”
— George Gallego
