NOTICE OF A PUBLIC HEARING
TO ADOPT A NEW BUILDING STANDARDS CODE

The City of Long Beach is conducting a public hearing to adopt and amend the 2019 Edition of the California Building Standards Code, in accordance with State law, and the 1997 Edition of the Uniform Housing Code including local amendments and restatements of Title 18, in their entirety; amendments to Chapters 3.90, 14.08; and Sections 8.56.020.C, 8.76.010.E, 8.76.010.J, 8.76.017.C, 8.76.030, 8.76.110, 9.37.170, 14.04.015, 21.33.045 and 21.45.400; deleting Chapters 8.59 and 14.32; and adding Chapters 14.44 and 14.48 to the Long Beach Municipal Code. The proposed changes will go into effect on January 1, 2020. The proposed amendments consist of structural, fire and life safety, green building and sustainability, and administrative provisions or procedures. The majority of the proposed amendments are a continuation of previously adopted amendments from prior code adoption cycles.

The 2019 Edition of the California Building Standards Code is comprised of the California Building Code, California Residential Code, California Electrical Code, California Plumbing Code, California Mechanical Code, California Existing Building Code, California Energy Code, California Green Building Standards Code, California Historical Building Code, and California Fire Code. Every three years, the State of California adopts the latest edition of the California Building Standards Code and Uniform Housing Code to establish uniform standards for the construction and maintenance of buildings, electrical systems, plumbing systems, mechanical systems, and fire and life safety systems. The California Health and Safety Code Sections 13143.5, 17922, 17958, 18938(b) and 18941.5(a) require that the latest edition of the California Building Standards Code and Uniform Housing Code apply to local construction 180 days after publication.
