Dedicating the Altar Flowers
Our “Remembering Our Loved Ones” program is beginning in January.
If you would like to have a Sunday’s Altar bouquet dedicated to the memory of a loved one, you need to…
•take an envelope found in the pew and fill in the information, providing the name of your loved one, the Sunday on which you wish to make a donation to the Flower Fund in memory of your loved one and your name. For your information, the cost of each bouquet is $40.50; whatever you donate will be appreciated.
•A notation will be included in your loved one’s selected Sunday’s bulletin, stating “An Altar bouquet this Sunday is dedicated to the memory of the name of your loved one by your name.
•Remember, it is wise to fill in the envelope in advance, reserving the Sunday of dedication. Each Sunday, there are two bouquets, so we can only take two names. If a date is very important to you, please send in your request as early as possible.
•Seal the envelope, and drop it in the offertory basket.

We here at Trinity treasure our community connections. Such connections are at the heart of the documentary "Join or Die," being screened on Saturday, January 11, at 2 pm in the C.H. Booth Library Meeting Room. The filmmakers bill their work as "a film about why you should join a club...and why the fate of America depends on it." In this feature documentary, follow the half-century story of America's civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam, whose groundbreaking "Bowling Alone" research into America's decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy's present crisis. Discussion follows viewing.
This film screening is co-sponsored by the Newtown Congregational Church and C.H.Booth Library. Register to view the film at https://chboothlibrary.libcal.com/event/13683365, or call 203-455-4623. Please pass this invitation to friends!

Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire and lighten with celestial fire; That through the ages all along, this may be our endless song. Praise to thy eternal merit, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
This Sunday, the Gospel reading will take us to the baptism of Jesus. This is the amazing moment when the skies opened up, the Holy Spirit came down in the form of a dove, and the voice of God declared “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”.
When planning music for this particular story from the Gospel, I tend to move toward the hymns that sing of the Holy Spirit. I wondered if I was being too “Pentecosty” so I chatted with Andrea about whether my music selections were too “Holy Spirity”. I loved her response, in which she said with exuberance that baptism should always be about the Holy Spirit! You know, she’s right! We tend to relegate the Holy Spirit to post-resurrection Jesus and his disciples in the upper room, but the Holy Spirit makes quite an entrance at Jesus’ baptism at the beginning of his ministry.
I grew up the daughter of a pastor and music minister. We spent part of my childhood in the American Baptist Church, and another part in the Pentecostal Church. So when the topic of the Holy Spirit comes up, my mind goes to the images ingrained in my memory of people speaking in tongues, dancing, and being “slain in the spirit”. Oh boy, THAT was some stuff to see as a kid! Thankfully, I have found myself in the Episcopal Church where the Holy Spirit is ever-present in a more personal way that keeps the fire in us burning. This week’s choral anthem by Thomas Attwood really speaks to that desire for the Holy Spirit to keep our souls inspired, and that this will be our endless song of praise.
So this Sunday, it’s ok if you feel a little “Pentecosty” as we read of Christ’s baptism and sing songs of the Holy Spirit. Because, yes, baptisms should always be about that!
In Christ,
Jennifer
