What's Happening?

Roadwork on Balls Hill Road between Benjamin Street and Live Oak Drive in McLean is scheduled to occur tomorrow evening, Wednesday, May 20, between 5 and 10 p.m. and Thursday, May 21, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. This segment of Balls Hill Road will be milled, paved and striped, providing a smooth driving surface as part of the 495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project.

One of the two lanes in this section of Balls Hill Road will be closed, with a flagging operation directing one-way traffic in place to accommodate this work.

In the event of inclement weather or other delays, this work will be rescheduled for the following day. However, work will not occur over the Memorial Day holiday weekend beginning at noon on Friday, May 22 through noon on Tuesday, May 26.

What Should Neighbors Expect?

• Noise from pavement milling machines and asphalt trucks and operations.
• Back-up alarm beeping (required for safety reasons).
• Light from pole-mounted construction lights, which are necessary to safely progress work after dark. To the extent feasible, lights will be directed away from residences.
• Neighbors are urged to allow for extra travel time in case of delays.

The 495 NEXT project team appreciates residents’ patience as this work is performed.

Construction of the 495 NEXT project began in March 2022. In late November 2025, the 495 Express Lanes extension between the Dulles Toll Road and the George Washington Memorial Parkway opened. All remaining project construction is anticipated to be completed by mid-2026.  

Construction plans are subject to change due to weather, resequencing of work to facilitate on-time completion of the overall project, and other factors.
