California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress
Summative Assessments and California Science Test
Parent and Guardian Notification Letter

Dear Junior and Senior Parents/Guardians:

As you may know, each year students at various grade levels participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). This year, your child will take the following test(s), depending on their grade level.

Grade 11:
  • Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics

Grade 12:
  • Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics
  • California Science Test (CAST)

Testing will be conducted remotely during the academic day from Monday, April 5 - Thursday, April 8.

The Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments and the CAST are online tests that measure what your student knows and is able to do. The tests include many different types of questions that allow students to interact with the test questions. The results of these tests help to identify gaps in knowledge or skills early on so your child can get the support needed to be successful in school.
In order to take the test(s), students will be downloading a secure browser onto their school-issued Bak Devices or their own personal devices during the month of February in Block 5 classes. If you prefer that your student use a school-issued Bak Device during testing, instead of their personal device, they will be asked to fill out a Google Form in order to check one out.

As the parent/guardian, you are an important part of your child’s education. To help your child get ready for the test(s), you can:
  • Talk about the test(s) with your child. Make sure they are not scared or anxious.
  • Tell your child that you and their teacher have high expectations and are both there to help, every step of the way.
  • Take a practice test with your child.
  • Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast before testing.
To learn more about the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments or the CAST, please visit the California Department of Education Parent Guides to Understanding webpage.

You can also view sample test questions on practice tests, which can be found on the CAASPP Online Practice and Training Tests Portal.

If you have any questions, please contact Assistant Principal Courtney Miller at [email protected]. We are looking forward to a successful testing week in April!

Sincerely,
