Nourish Pierce County

August 2024 Newsletter

Hello Ken,

Since 2010, Our Savior Lutheran Church has been giving back to Nourish in a BIG way! The Abundance Garden began as a small garden ministry dedicated to giving back to the community. In their first year, OSLC planted, grew, harvested, and donated over 500 pounds of fresh produce to Nourish's Southeast food bank!

"I just love to see the produce - planting it, watching it grow, and the harvest is the reward."

- Sig, Abundance Garden Volunteer

In the years since, the Abundance Garden has donated more than 11,000 pounds of fresh produce to help those facing hunger in our community.

Community garden partnerships, like the Abundance Garden, exist at each of our six brick-and-mortar food banks, with even larger partnerships taking place between local farms and our warehouse, ensuring all 21 of our food banks and mobile sites have access to fresh, locally grown produce.

Nourish is proud to have so many local community gardens supporting our food banks. These partnerships help strengthen our communities and also allow us to focus our food spending on other foods while still providing healthy and fresh local produce to people in need.

"It's been such a blessing, this is really good food. We really rely on that fresh produce."

- Jaime, Food Bank Guest

Promote Your Vision for a Better World

August is Make-a-Will Month. If you have property, or children, or other family members who depend on you, making a will is a good idea.

Why make a will? Well, a will can help you

  • Avoid family disputes.
  • Make it clear who will inherit your house or other property.
  • Make it easier for your heirs to avoid unnecessary taxes or legal costs.
  • Make provisions for children or other family members.

A will can also extend your vision of a better world into the future. Using your will to make a significant gift to a charity like Nourish can reduce the tax burden on your family and keep sustaining causes you supported during your lifetime. A legacy gift like this is easy to make and helps make the future brighter.

While you can make a will for free online (at such sites as freewill.com or wa-wills.com/legal-library/get-started/), working with an attorney is the best course of action for many people.

If you have questions about naming Nourish as a beneficiary in your will, please contact Marion Sharp, Director of Development at 253-383-3164 or by email at marionsharp@nourishpc.org.

Grant Highlights

A very big thank you to the Gary Milgard Family for awarding Nourish Pierce County a $165,000 grant! This generous award for operating expenses comes at a crucial time for Nourish. Inflation is hitting everyone hard, and more and more people are seeking Nourish’s help. At the same time, virtually all our costs of operation have increased. This grant will go a long way in helping Nourish combat the ill effects of inflation, keeping our doors open and lights on for our neighbors in need.

Thank you Key Bank for your generous $150,000 donation, we are honored to have you as part of our community as we increase access to nutritious food in our county! Check out the article linked below to learn more about this incredible gift.
