July 2024 Newsletter

Hello Ken,

For over a year, Michele has been a dedicated Mobile Food Bank Volunteer. Originally, Michele and her high schooler were searching for opportunities related to food insecurity for service hour needs. Now, as her kiddo is preparing to head off to college, Michele decided to continue volunteering at both the Bethlehem and Salishan mobile sites. She saw the need was clear.

Born and raised in Tacoma, Michele has deep roots in her community and a desire to connect with our guests. “I love getting to know our guests. When I get to know our regular guests, and then I don’t see them for several weeks, I sometimes worry about them.”

Michele describes her volunteer experience as eye-opening, as those who may have previously not used food banks have begun to seek out this resource. “Anyone of us can experience food insecurity. It is nice to know that anyone can come in, sign up, and feed their family – no judgement.”

Volunteers like Michele are vital to making our work possible. Thank you, Michele, and all of our volunteers, for serving guests with compassion, dignity, and respect!

Partnership Highlight

Once a month Washington State University Extension, SNAP-Ed comes out to our Northwest Food Bank to give a demo on how to make nutritious meals on a budget. The SNAP-Ed program at WSU Extension Pierce County strives to improve the health outcomes of low-income Pierce County residents through group education and community-based partnerships. They offer research-tested nutrition education resources to Pierce County residents.

In June, Snap-Ed employee Kimberlyn highlighted potatoes in two versions of potato salad. Kimberlyn works closely with our food bank manager to create recipes each month that are not just healthy, but also feature foods that our food banks have an abundance of that week. Nourish is proud to partner with such an amazing program and provide these resources to our guests.

Leaving a Legacy

Legacy giving is a great way that you and your family can support the charitable causes that matter most to you. These kinds of gifts can do the following:

  • Provide sustainable financial resources to help get food to people in need so they can get back on their feet and move on with their lives.
  • Provide you an opportunity to have your charitable values live well beyond your lifetime.
  • Provide tax benefits that may help assure that more of your hard-earned resources go toward the things that you care deeply about such as your family and values.

We encourage you to consult with an attorney or financial advisor to see if a planned gift or a legacy gift makes sense for you. For more information on legacy giving, visit nourishpc.org/donate or contact Marion Sharp, Nourish's Development Director at marionsharp@nourishpc.org.
