Nourish Pierce County

March 2025 Newsletter

Hello Ken,

As we step into the season of spring, we’re excited to share some fresh changes happening at our food banks. Spring is a time for renewal, and we’ve embraced that spirit with a few updates aimed at better serving our community. From improving the way we serve our clients to enhancing our space, we’re committed to making sure everyone in need feels welcomed, supported, and cared for.

Our guest comfort and experience is important to all of us at Nourish. To improve we’re rolling out Waitlist Me (a waitlist management system like the ones restaurants use) at the Graham Nourish Food Bank which will help streamline service, reduce wait times, and let people wait in the comfort of their car, rather than outside in a line. This will help make the process smoother and more comfortable for everyone. We have used this at our Edgewood Nourish Food Bank for more than two years, and it has made a huge difference. We’re looking forward to expanding this to our other food banks in the coming months. This month, we’ve also redesigned our floor layout at Southeast to create a more efficient and welcoming environment, allowing us to serve our neighbors in the best way possible. Additionally, we’ve taken the time to give the Lakes food bank a deep clean, ensuring that our space remains safe, organized, and inviting.

These changes are just the beginning as we continue to adapt and improve, but none of it would be possible without your support. Together, we’re creating a place where fresh starts and new opportunities can grow. Thank you for being part of our journey — we look forward to all that we can accomplish in this new season.

Volunteer Spotlight

At the Graham South Hill Food Bank, we are lucky to have many dedicated volunteers, this month we are highlighting: Mary-Jo and Vikki. These two incredible women have been volunteering with us for the past three years, and in that time, they've not only made a huge impact on the food bank but also formed a beautiful friendship.

Lovingly referred to as "The Dream Team," Mary-Jo and Vikki work the same shifts, laughing, chatting, and bonding over their shared work history.

Since forming a friendship at the food bank, Mary-Jo and Vikki now enjoy time together outside of volunteering, enjoying monthly outings, girls' nights, and even making plans to travel together in the future. Their story is a wonderful reminder of how volunteering can lead to unexpected and lasting friendships.

We are grateful for the kindness, dedication, and friendship that Mary-Jo and Vikki bring to the Graham South Hill Food Bank. Thank you both for being such a shining example of the power of giving and the bonds it can create.

Start Volunteering Today!

So far this year, Nourish volunteers served over 5,900 hours at our food banks!

At Nourish Pierce County, our volunteers are more than just helpers—they are family. Whether they serve daily, weekly, or whenever they can, each person who walks through our doors quickly becomes part of something bigger. Over the years, we have celebrated life’s joys together—births, graduations, marriages—and supported one another through hardships. Recently, we have faced the heartbreaking loss of three beloved members of our Edgewood food bank family. Their absence is felt deeply, and though they are no longer with us, their kindness and dedication continue to inspire us. Click the link below to learn more about each of these wonderful volunteers and the legacy they leave behind.

Thank You Nourish Partners

Special shout-out to Tacoma Rotary #8! Rotary #8 recently awarded Nourish Pierce County a $8,000 grant for food purchases. Every dollar of this award will be spent on healthy food for our shelves.

We cannot stress enough how important food purchasing funds are right now. In 2024, Nourish served thousands more guests than in 2023, yet we had less food to give. Inflation rates slowed, but prices certainly have not gone down. Funds for food purchases help Nourish keep up with demand so we can continue serving our community.

Thank you, Tacoma Rotary #8!

Food Fright

We had a great time embracing the Ides of March last weekend at Food Fright! If you didn't get a chance to join this fabulous storytelling event, check out the recording on Nourish's YouTube channel.
