Nourish Pierce County

March 2024 Newsletter

Hello Ken,

Every Monday like clockwork, Sam rides his rusty old bike to one of Nourish's food banks. After shopping for his food, he bags it up outside, places the bags on his handlebars, and rides home. Andrew, another food bank guest, noticed this man on his bike every week and after talking, offered him a ride home. The next time we saw Sam, he had a new bike. Andrew saw Sam's need and gifted him a new bike so that he could get around easier and more safely. Now Sam makes this same journey every week on a new bike more suited to his needs. Stories like Sam's lift our spirits and get us excited for the community our guests, volunteers, and staff are able to create within our food banks.

Food Facts

March is National Nutrition Month. Nourish food banks are more than just a place for canned and dry foods; we are dedicated to providing fresh, nutritious food for every guest who walks through our doors. Donations and partnerships with local grocery stores and gardens help make this possible while also reducing food waste.

"This doesn't happen in other places. You get a box, that's it. You don't get to shop for yourself or get fresh foods. This is great!"

- Mary, Graham Food Bank Guest

We Need Your Help!

The Nourish Pierce County Development team is looking for a few volunteers to help with administrative, fundraising, and communications projects coming up this Spring. The following opportunities are available starting now and can be done with minimal time commitments.

Volunteer Translator:

We are searching for volunteers who speak Ukrainian and English who are willing to speak with some of our food bank guests about their Nourish food bank story. This requires someone who speaks both languages, can listen compassionately while guests share about their experience, and someone who can transcribe or take notes so Nourish can use the stories in future newsletters and funding opportunities. This volunteer opportunity would take a few hours a month and could be done remotely.

We are also seeking individuals who speak Russian, Korean, and Spanish to help with our guest surveys in the Spring and Fall.

Data Entry Volunteer:

We are seeking someone who can assist with data entry tasks at our administrative office. As Nourish grows and serves more guests, we are looking to become more involved in our community. This requires outreach to local businesses and individuals. We are looking for someone to volunteer a few hours during the week to help us manage these lists and research prospective partners.

Phone Volunteer:

The Nourish administrative office takes many phones calls throughout the day, directing guests to the closest food bank, assisting donors in making donations, or talking with people in the community to help them find the care they need. We are looking for a friendly volunteer who can support our administrative staff in answering these calls. Shifts can be as short as an hour and take place any time during the work week.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact [email protected] or call 253-383-3164 to let us know what you are interested in doing and your availability.

We Are Hiring!

NOURISH IS LOOKING FOR A CDL-A DRIVER WITH A HEART FOR OUR MISSION TO OPERATE OUR MOBILE FOOD BANKS

Nourish Pierce County has identified several more locations that would benefit from mobile food bank services but we need additional drivers to open those sites. In addition to new sites, each time one of our current drivers is out due to illness or vacation, Nourish is forced to close mobile food bank sites, meaning those who need us most may go hungry that day.

Nourish is looking for an individual who has a Class A commercial driver’s license, can drive a tractor-trailer vehicle, and who also has the passion, interest, and skill to manage the food bank. This includes everything from welcoming and checking in guests, ensuring quality control and food safety, to helping with their shopping experience.

If you know that person, or maybe are that person,

we’d love to have you apply!
