82.6%

We keep small family farms in business and get their food to people who need it.

Jackson County has lost 82.6% of its farmland since 1950. Every acre that goes to development is gone for good, and the farmer who worked it is gone with it. Farms stay farms when farmers have somewhere to sell.

That is what we do. We buy from more than 50 family farms across Jackson County and the region, paying fair prices and moving product through retail, wholesale, food pantry, and food-as-medicine channels. A farmer has a market. A family on a tight budget has fresh local produce on the table. The money stays here, the land stays in production, and the food gets to you in a day instead of a week.

Our local food program is gaining speed. We are building multiple food-as-medicine channels, working with food pantries across the region, and moving toward opening our retail space. We recently received grants from the WNC Bridge Foundation and the Clif Family Foundation, and we have applied for federal funding to expand our work with mothers and families through a maternal produce prescription program.

Separately, North Carolina's FY2026-27 budget, signed July 7, restores the Healthy Opportunities Pilot at $25 million. HOP is the program that lets Medicaid pay for food, housing, and transportation as health care, and its restoration keeps that pathway open for food-as-medicine work across western North Carolina.

Keep farmers farming. Local food for everyone.

Christmas in July, sort of.

It's the middle of summer and we're already thinking about firs. Bear Valley Farm in Glenville is a choose-and-cut Christmas tree farm, and on Saturday, November 7, before their season starts, they're hosting us for dinner among the rows.

Tickets are open now, which feels early. It is. But this seats a limited number, and we'd rather you have the date than wish you did.

Dinner is built from local and regional food. Local wine and beer are included, along with non-alcoholic options. Every ticket supports the work of keeping farmers farming and local food for everyone.

We'll also have news that night about something we're starting. You'll hear it at the table first.

Saturday, November 7, 2026

4:30–7:30 PM

Bear Valley Farm, 231 Bee Tree Rd, Glenville, NC 28736

WNC From the Ground Up is a 501(c)(3) organization (EIN 99-1743701). The fair market value of this dinner is estimated at $90 per ticket. The remaining $60 may be deductible as a charitable contribution. Please consult your tax advisor.

Rain Barrels for a Cause

Rain Barrels for a Good Cause, Two of Them, Actually

We've got a rain barrel sale going, and it does more than save you money on your water bill. It supports two organizations at once.

We're running this sale alongside our sister organization, the Civilian Disaster Response Organization (CDRO) in Haywood County, and splitting the proceeds. CDRO had been working to reach the minimum order needed to run their own sale, so we combined our orders to get them across the line. If you've followed Helene recovery in our region, you've likely felt CDRO's work even if you never saw their name. Working out of the WNC Regional Livestock Center stockyard, they were a quiet but mighty force getting hay, feed, and supplies to farmers who had lost nearly everything. We're honored to stand alongside them now.

The barrels themselves are practical and built to last. They lower your water bill and keep stormwater out of our creeks, and you can use the captured rainwater for your garden or to water your chickens. Composters and downspout accessories are available too.

Supplies are limited, so reserve yours soon.

Order online at http://rainbarrel.ca/wnc

Every barrel is a small step toward healthier gardens, cleaner water, and a stronger mountain community. Thank you for growing with us.

Every dinner ticket, every rain barrel, every CSA share, every wholesale order keeps a farmer farming and puts local food on someone's table. If you want to do more, we take donations of any size, and they go straight into the work: buying from our farms, stocking pantries, and getting fresh food to the families who need it most.
