Our mission is to develop a forum community that empowers Alberta municipal OHS & HR professionals to grow their networks, spark discussion, and support the sharing of resources, knowledge, and experience.
The forum is a natural evolution of the Safety Advisor Email List, with the added benefits of search features, post history, content categorization, moderation, and customizable notification settings.
Forum membership is restricted to individuals who are employed as Safety Advisors, Disability Managers, Human Resource professionals, (or equivalent) for Alberta municipalities or other member organizations.

Important Audit Timeframes and Deadlines
|
Audit season is in full swing! Remember to keep an eye on your timelines, and ensure that your audit submission complies with AMHSA and PIR requirements. If an extension is needed to any of these deadlines due to extenuating circumstances please ensure your request is received prior to deadlines.
Audit data gathering – 45 day maximum.
Audit report writing and audit submission to AMHSA – 21 day maximum counted from the last day of data gathering activities.
All certification and maintenance audits as well as action plans completed in lieu of maintenance audits must be submitted to AMHSA no later than Dec. 1, 2021.

Alberta Labour & WCB Updates
|
|
New: The Government of Alberta has released a new update on changes to the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and revised regulations. An updated overview publication sheet is available here.
Changes take effect Dec. 1, 2021.
|

New: October's edition of Worksight magazine includes information on 2022 Premium Rate Statements, Train and Place (TaP) programs, updated OHS laws, and new employer and worker fact sheets on vaccination protocols and worker benefits.

AMHSA is pleased to announce it has scheduled the following ISO 45001 training for virtual delivery in the first quarter of 2022:
ISO 45001:2018 - Understanding the Requirements: March 9 and 10 ($480 + tax)
ISO 45001:2018 – Internal Auditor: March 30 ($240 + tax)
ISO 45001:2018 – Lead Auditor: March 31 ($240 + tax)
Our instructor will once again be Joseph Gadol, from SGS Academy. All classes will begin at 8:00 am and webcam and microphone are required to participate. Please contact shannon@amhsa.net for details or to register.

Rural Utilities Safety Association (RUSA) Annual Conference
|
|
This year the RUSA conference will be a hybrid event - hosted both in-person (Red Deer) and virtually - to accommodate participants in December. The schedule is available online, as is registration.
This cost-effective conference includes pre-conference sessions on Tuesday, November 30, including a Contractor Safety Management full-day session. An Opening Keynote starts off the day on Wednesday, followed by safety sessions such as Legislation Update, AMHSA Website Forums, and Firefighter Decontamination. Thursday’s safety sessions include the WCB’s Psychological Injuries in the Workplace seminar, and Safety Officer in the Incident Command Post, with the conference ending Thursday afternoon with a keynote close out address.

All-Hazards Incident Management Team Academy (AHIMT)
|
|
The Academy will bring together Emergency Management professionals from across Canada representing the public and private sectors to engage in a week-long training event with two distinct aims:
- To build capacity to support Type 3 and larger incident response; and
- To provide opportunities for networking and best-practice sharing
Dates: February 14 to 18, 2022
Location: NAIT campus in Edmonton, Alberta.
Pre-Requisites: ICS 100, ICS 200, ICS 300
AEMA’s Basic Emergency Management is recommended for participants.
Candidates must have endorsement from their DEM, AHJ, and/or supervisor to attend.
You must complete ICS 300 to attend the Academy. There must be six months between your completion of ICS 200 and the start of ICS 300. We have ICS 300 available for registration now, so you can complete it in time for the 2022 Academy:
All CADEM ICS offerings adhere to ICS Canada standards and principles. Where ICS Canada curriculum is not available, FEMA standards are adopted and followed.

Musculoskeletal Injury Resources & Webinars
|
|
Musculoskeletal injuries due to repetitive use, overexertion, and heavy lifting are a significant problem for workers in Alberta. The province has identified MSIs as one of it's three system priorities for Alberta's OHS prevention initiative as these injuries are common, costly, and preventable.

Ergonomics Coaching Sessions
In partnership with EWI Works, we're offering a monthly ergonomics coaching webinar! Register now to take advantage of these free 90-minute sessions.
Vehicle Ergonomics - Driving and Operating Heavy Equipment (Nov. 18 @ 2pm): Anyone who spends significant time driving, or operating heavy equipment will benefit from learning about all the items within a vehicle that should be adjusted by the operator. This session will also discuss other health and comfort strategies such as how often to get up and move during the day. Front line operators, as well as those involved in purchasing fleet vehicles will gain knowledge during this session.
Vehicle Ergonomics - Mobile Office (Dec. 16 @ 2pm): Is your vehicle used as mobile office? Do you use a laptop or other technology in your vehicle? This session will focus on how to setup the vehicle for tasks other than driving. Anyone who uses their vehicle as an office, as well as those involved in purchasing fleet vehicles will gain knowledge during this session.
