Message from President
Billie Araiza
|
Greetings!
I hope everyone is staying well and healthy! We have a lot of motions to vote on at this week’s business meeting so please be sure to join us on Zoom Wednesday at noon.
My daughter had to go back to the hospital for another surgery due to internal bleeding. We spent Halloween at Enloe Hospital, no trick or treating there. I hope the rest of you were able to enjoy Halloween with your loved ones.
I certainly did not foresee writing my President's message from Enloe but here I am. I have asked Joyce to send out a Survey Monkey to see how many members would be comfortable meeting in person starting in January if our county continues to have less restrictions. The Elks Lodge is looking at allowing clubs to start meeting there again. Please be on the lookout for the survey and be sure to fill it out. Once we do start meeting in person we will have a hybrid meeting where we hold zoom at the same time during the meeting so everyone has the opportunity to participate at their own comfort level.
I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at our Business Meeting. Remember to wear your nametag and Soropti-wear. You never know when your name might be drawn.
With Gratitude,
President Billie

November Senior Moment of The Month
|
I had a wonderful opportunity to visit one of our senior members, Vilma Starnes, and had her reflect on her memories of Soroptimist over the years. First, a little bit of history. Going back, way back, her mother immigrated to the U.S. from Germany in 1923 and her father from Switzerland. Here in the U.S., they crossed paths and the rest is history. Her parents started a bakery in Oroville, the Log Cabin, and it became quite successful. So successful, her parents opened another bakery in Chico that quickly expanded to seventeen delivery trucks and delivered all the way to Oregon.
Her mother first joined the Soroptimist in 1931 at the Oroville charter and became president in 1946. Vilma was born in 1927 and lived in Oroville a short time before moving to Chico with her parents in 1933. There she graduated from Notre Dame High School (where Doris Arbuckle and her were friends) and later was enrolled at Stanford University for a short time. She quickly realized college was not a place she wanted to be, so she settled down and married her high school sweetheart in 1946. They started a business together, Butte Roofing Company, where she took care of things in the office while her husband did the manual labor. In between helping run her family business, she felt she was missing something in life and decided she would join the Soroptimist in 1967. She stated “I was very shy and it brought me out of my shell”. After a few years, and like her mother before her, she became president in 1973. I asked what some of her more fondest memories were about being a Soroptimist and she quickly replied the friendships and professionalism. She went on to say being president was the most inspiring with a lot of hard work…”it does more for you than you do for the club”. As she reminisced more, she talked about helping women after they were released form jail and aided in their return to society. Then an old song the Soroptimists use to sing came to mind and gladly broke out in song with he following:
I’d rather be a Soroptimist than anything else I know
puts the punch into the bunch and keeps us on the go.
I’d rather be a Soroptimist than anything else I know.
Vilma is now ninety three and living out her days here in Chico where she would occasionally visit the club pre Covid-19. Not a day goes by she isn’t looking for something new or inspiring to fill her time. However, she manages few properties with a little help and her business is still here in Chico and has been handed down to her children and grandchildren. She was married to her late husband for 67 years until he passed away only eight years ago.

For many years Soroptimists have been helping the Salvation as volunteer bell ringers. You can make a difference with every ring this year. The funds you raise as a Salvation Army Bell Ringer will make a year-round impact in our community through social services assistance, homeless shelters, disaster relief, children's programs, rehabilitation services, anti-human trafficking, and more!
During this year with the pandemic in full force there is a greater need for the Salvation Army. Bring a friend or significant other to ring the bell with you if you wish. If you are concerned about your health you need not volunteer. But if you feel healthy to volunteer there is a required video you can watch for safely ringing the bell. See below:
This is the info regarding Covid-19 during bell ringing. It may help with people who are hesitant to ring during the pandemic.
