Message from President Sara Beacham
Greetings!

Hello Everyone! This is the 13th e-blast message I have had the pleasure to write for you. Some would consider the number 13 to be unlucky, but I am of the opposing camp. We had a very busy weekend in the community. On Saturday, we were in two places at the same time. Our Fall Bistro Bag sales ended last week, and pickup happened this past Saturday. I can’t wait to dive into mine with the family. Did you get a Fall Bistro Bag?

Also on Saturday, we set up an informational tent at the Butte Humane Society Grand Opening while some of our members volunteered to watch over the Bounce House. It was a lot of fun! We met lots of great people, braved a downpour just as the ribbon cutting was starting, and helped our community.

If you’re looking for more pictures, be sure to follow us on Instagram @siofchico. Not sure about Instagram? Find out what we are doing on our Members Only Facebook page.

This week we are hearing from two members of the North Valley Health Education Foundation board. I have had the pleasure of working with these two wonderful women over the past 10 years and am pleased that you get to hear more about their stories and work in the health community. Next week, we get to help our internal fundraising efforts by getting our shopping shoes on for Christmas in November. I hear there’s a lot of great items! Can’t wait!!!

Remember, that we need you to RSVP for each lunch. When you see the email from Kathy, fill it out and include your guests. If you have any trouble with the Google form, feel free to reach out to myself or Kathy directly. We want each and every one of you to come to as many club lunches as possible.

See you Wednesday.

President Sara
Janet Ellis, MSN, ACHE ® My nursing education began at Shasta College in the Associate Degree Nursing program. I eventually, achieved my master’s degree in Nursing through Chico State. I spent most of my nursing career in leadership and management roles at Enloe Medical Center. I started as a new graduate nurse and retired as the Vice President in Nursing. Most of my years were spent in the Emergency Services areas.

Highlights of my career at Enloe include being the first Mobile Intensive Care Nurse in Butte County, having a key role in starting the first Advanced Life Support Ambulance Service in the area, providing leadership in Enloe’s Trauma Center Designation, implementing the Enloe FlightCare program, authoring the proposal for the Enloe Outpatient Cancer Center at Fountain Plaza, being presented with the Enloe Medical Center “Core Values” award, and receiving the Enloe Medical Center Board of Trustees "Circle of Champions" award for quality improvement.

I failed my first retirement and decided to share my nursing experience through teaching. I started at Butte Community College and have been at Chico State since 2012. Most of my time at Chico State was coordinating the RN-BSN Program. I am currently teaching Leadership and Management and Professional Issues in the Chico State Pre-licensure RN program.

I live on a 40-acre ranch north of town with my husband, Roy. Between us, we have six children and 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. We raise walnuts, have six horses, two dogs, and a small heard of beef cattle. For fun, we enjoy trail riding and traveling.
Donna Davis, RRT I discovered the field of respiratory therapy (RT) during my CNA training at Santa Rosa Junior College which led me to Butte College’s program. I completed the RT program in June of 1986 with an Associates degree and a Bachelor of Science in RT from Oregon Institute of Technology in August of 2006.  My career in respiratory therapy has included both providing direct patient care in acute care facilities and teaching for an associate degree RT program.

In August of 1996, I was hired by Butte College’s Respiratory Care program as an associate faculty, primarily teaching in the clinical environment. I transitioned to a full-time position in the fall of 2000 and added the department chair role a few years later. I have overseen both the clinical aspects of the program, as well as the entire program during my tenure. I have participated and played active roles in our Academic Senate, Curriculum Committee, Academic Council, Instructional Skills workshops, and developing our Guided Pathways process. In the Spring of 2016, I was selected as the Rotary Club’s Educator of the Year for Butte College. During my time with the RT program at Butte College, I have taught every class the program offers, along with adapting our curriculum continuously to address the ongoing changes in the field.

I have lived in the Chico area for the last 33 years and have two children and two grandchildren, all of which I absolutely adore. I grew up in the Willows area on a rice farm and continue to be actively involved its care and maintenance.
Serve on a Sierra Nevada Region Committee

You’ve got the passion! Who’s ready to take doing life-changing, meaningful work in an atmosphere of friendship and fun to the next level? As you have heard, or will hear at the Fall District Meetings, we need YOU to help keep us the healthy region we continue to be. And, become a part of our moving forward into the next century history. Our region needs committee members to help us reach our big goal…and have a whole lot of fun doing it! Below is a link to the Committee Sign Up Form. If you have any problems clicking through on the link, simply copy it, and paste it into your browser. Filling out the form is not a firm commitment; there is a place to simply ask me more questions so I can contact you to discuss. And it provides me with a great spreadsheet too! I look forward to seeing how we can perhaps put fresh new spins on our time-honored traditions, and for that WE NEED YOU!

For more INFORMATION about the various committees, what they do and when they do it, I have also included a link to the Sierra Nevada Region Website, taking you directly to the forms page. Committee information is spelled out in our governing documents, Bylaws and Fiscal Standing Rules (May 2021) and our Procedures (October 2020). Don’t delay, sign up today!

Time is passing quickly for Clubs to recruit applicants for Live Your Dream Awards. The LYD website closes on November 15. This is the deadline for applicants to complete their application online; less than 6 weeks away. If your LYD Chair has not logged in to the website to sign the confidentiality agreement, then they will have no access to download the club applications. There was some confusion at the beginning of this process with SIA. Emails were sent out this week to club presidents and club chairs with information for logging in to the site. Our goal is 100% of the clubs in our region participating. Good luck!

November SI Chico Fur Baby (and Member) of the Month!

I am happy to introduce myself to all of you Soroptimists! My name is Sophia and I’m a Havanese. I just celebrated my 10th birthday. Fun fact: I share the same birthday with my mom … but she’s much older than 10. My breed is the national dog of Cuba so I can handle humidity and heat due to my unique coat of silky hair. My kin were bred for aristocrats and lived in palaces and estates. I might not live in a palace but I’m spoiled just the same. My family says I walk like a snob due to my hind body being slightly higher than my front, which makes my walk quite pretentious! I was born to be a companion dog and I take my job very seriously. I live in Chico with my family, and my mom Lupe is a Soroptimist which keeps her very busy planning fundraisers. While she works, I lay at her feet to keep her company. My favorite activity is to cuddle and my favorite snack is cheese. If you come to visit, I will be your instant best friend and bring you all my toys because after all, anybody entering my home is there to see me, right?
My name is Lupe Medrano and I am one of your Director Delegates and Fundraising Co-Chairs for the year. I was born and raised in the little town of Colusa about 50 miles north and attended college at Chico State. I graduated with a degree in Child Development and Psychology and with baby #1 on the way. My plan was to stay home until my daughter started school – but by her first day of kindergarten, baby #2 was on the way! My husband and I just celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary and I have had the privilege of being a stay-at-home mom and working as a volunteer through every stage of my children’s lives. My daughter is now 22 and my son is 16 and after what seems like a life-time of volunteering in my children’s activities - PTOs, Girl Scouts, National Charity League and soccer leagues – it’s time to focus my attention on volunteering in my own club with my own interests. My good friend Bonnie Chapman introduced me to SI Chico in 2018 and I have been an active member since. I enjoy reading, crafting and traveling and hope to continue to be active in this club for many more years.

Ladies!

Spend a few hours in our beautiful park, cheering on the Girls on the Run participants as they run their celebration 5K. Our club is a longtime supporter of this program and this is our day to show up for them. They need course monitors (cheering on the sidelines and watching out for the girls safety) and also some areas of assistance. Click on the sign up genius. I guarantee, you'll get more than you give by helping out with this one.

Thank-you!
