Tracking and integrating findings across disciplines is a persistent challenge in health disparities research. A new center at UCSF – co-directed by principal investigators Edwin Charlebois, MPH, PhD, Stuart Gansky, DrPH, and Kim Rhoads, MD, MPH will take on this challenge through coordination of research from 11 newly funded centers across the U.S. on the root causes of, and ways to eliminate, disparities in multiple chronic diseases. New Selection Tool for Cancer Clinical Trials

Created by Dr. Hala Borno, this online tool is meant to help clinicians rapidly identify clinical trials that they should consider for their patients. The tool also provides a directory of clinical trial contacts.

Originally a pilot for prostate trials, the tool now includes bladder, colorectal, kidney, pancreatic, and most gynecologic trials. Expansion to all sites is expected in 2022. Visit ucsftrials.com to try it out.
Awards & Distinctions
Hala Borno, MD was named to the inaugural cohort of the Diversity in Clinical Trials Career Development Program launched by the BMS Foundation.

Kim Rhoads, MD, MS, MPH will be honored with a 2021 Distinguished Citizens Award at the Commonwealth Club’s virtual gala on Nov 19, 2021. Dr. Rhoads was also honored as an Impact Warrior at a recent Golden State Warriors home game.

Kevan Shokat, PhD will receive the first Breakthrough Science Award from the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation.

Mitch Berger, MD received the 2021 Rosenblum Distinguished Service Award from the AANS/CNS Joint Section on Tumors.

Vijay Ramani, PhD received an NIH Director’s New Innovator Award for a project, “Single-Cell Chemical Transcriptomic Dissection of an Essential Transcription Factor Network.”

Nina Shah, MD was invited to participate in the 2021 People v. Cancer Summit presented by The Atlantic. The summit explored the important ways in which prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and well-being are interrelated.

Julian Hong, MD, MS was named the 2021 Publication Award Winner by the Radiation Oncology Institute.

Ophir Klein, MD, PhD was elected as Vice President of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR).

Atul Butte, MD, PhD was appointed to the Advisory Committee to the Director, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services.

HDFCCC Bench to Bedside Workshop: July 18 - 22, 2022

This workshop will provide training for hypothesis-driven patient-focused research, covering clinical and preclinical iteration. Attendees will participate in interactive didactic and individualized discussions that culminate in a translational and/or clinical research protocol synopsis focused on testing a patient-centered hypothesis of their interest(s).
