Vol. 1, No. 20 - November 6, 2015
Celebrate the Einstein Centennial

One hundred years ago, an obscure technical assistant in the Swiss Patent Office published a series of papers that we now refer to as the theory of General Relativity and Albert Einstein's name became synonymous with the word "genius." After a century of reviews, tests and challenges, this theory still holds up and explains the outer world as we know it today. The entire month of November will celebrate this achievement as people from all over the world join in celebrating Einstein, science and the pursuit of knowledge.

At Brain Matters 2015, we're joining in the celebration by exploring the inner workings of genius through the lens of neuroscience. While it might not be immediately apparent, our studies of the brain today owe a huge debt to Einstein's work. We use fiber optics to manipulate neurons into expressing or suppressing certain genes. We apply quantum physics to understand the electro-chemical signaling in between neurons. We probe Einstein's preserved brain, trying to find the secret to his genius, so far to no avail.

You can learn more about Einstein's unremarkable life and remarkable career here. Check out the Einstein Centennial celebration on their homepage.

Dr. Marti (left) with colleagues from the University of Valencia, Spain.

Dr. Soraya L. Vallés Marti graduated in Biological Science at the University of Valencia and remained there to undertake a PhD under the supervision of Consuelo Guerri at Research Institution (Instituto de Investigaciones Citológicas), which she completed in 1996. Her dissertation was "Changes of astroglia intermediate filaments gene expression during rat brain development: Effect of alcohol exposure."

Today, she studies inflammation and oxidative stress mechanisms in Alzheimer's disease. She is also studying the Central Nervous System and how it controls cancer by hormones. She is working on a grant to conduct a study about stem cells and brain.

ATD is celebrating Employee Learning Week December 7-11. Learning professionals around the world are using this limited time to highlight the critical connection between learning and achieving organizational results. In essence, participating learning teams are running an ad campaign, selling their services to the consumers of training within their organization.

Using Neuroscience to Enhance Your Mentoring Practice

I had the pleasure of helping members of the International Mentoring Association (IMA) apply
neuroscience to their mentoring practice. This organization is at the forefront of the application of brain science to help people change their behavior. We had a great exchange of ideas and I'll be making a recording available to you soon.

My Session with Steve Haskin at Training 2016

Corporate training today is all business. Many corporations actually forbid the use of comedy or humor during training. But did you know that your brain is finely tuned to respond to humor? When you understand the neuroscience of humor, you can incorporate it into your existing training programs to increase learner engagement, recall and retention. Please join me and former Saturday Night Live comedy writer Steve Haskin for this highly interactive session. We promise to make you laugh - and learn. This session is recommended for directors/managers, decision makers, designers, e-learning developers, learning executives and trainers/facilitators. The content is equally appropriate for new practitioners as for senior learning professionals.

Are You  Following Me?

If you're like me, you can't get enough information about the application of neuroscience to enhance learning and performance. I spend several hours a day culling through research papers, press releases, blogs and newspaper articles to curate the best news about the learning profession and I send it out as a tweet. If you'd like to get this information daily, just follow me on twitter @margiemeacham.
