With Gratitude

As Thanksgiving approaches, I always take time to reflect and rejoice in the good things happening around me. Without a doubt, LOLA Arts is at the top of my list! It positively impacts our Northwoods community; in fact, it is a necessary part of the area.
 
Our vibrant art center continues to flourish due to a hard-working board of directors, outstanding teachers and musicians willing to share their talents for little remuneration, eager students willing to explore and expand their artistic interests by taking classes and enjoying music performances, volunteers willing to lend a helping hand and, donors willing to provide financial and material support.
 
I am sure you are part of at least one of the groups that help LOLA thrive. It is with gratitude that LOLA thanks you for your supportive role. As you read through the rest of this newsletter, you will find many ways to continue to assist LOLA such as taking a class, submitting a holiday music recording, purchasing a gift certificate, volunteering, and/or, making a donation on Giving Tuesday - December 1st.

November 20 Birch Bark Acrylic Bird Painting with Sue Schurch
Artist Sue Brucks-Schurch will guide you as you create your own acrylic painting on a piece of prepared birch tree bark that will include a wire display hanger. Choose a chickadee, cardinal, or blue jay bird to be the focal point. If time permits, paint a few different pieces. All birch tree bark will be unique sizes. Select your birch bark piece(s) upon arrival to class.


November 23 Create A Powerful Watercolor Snow Scene with Dale Popovich
The instructor, Dale Popovich, will share his 40+ years of professional teaching, knowledge and techniques. Dale will cover how-to paint snow scenes exploring color temperature, intensity and value. Students will learn how to build a painting from start to finish while gaining a deeper understanding of the techniques, properties and tools of transparent watercolor with a focusing on large patterns of light and dark.
December 1 Abstract Mixed Media Watercolor Class with Lisa Krueger
The instructor, Lisa Krueger, will take you on a creative journey. You will start with a watercolor wash on Arches paper and build your mixed media masterpiece. The paint process is fun and includes layering. Cheesecloth and webbing spray are used in this process. At the end of this session participants will leave with a complete 10” X 14″ original piece of art in colors of your choice. Mid-way through our creative day we will take a lunch break so do pack a lunch.
December 8 Watercolor Collage with Lisa Krueger
Spend the day creating a unique piece of art using fun techniques. The instructor, Lisa Krueger, will share creative layering techniques that will take you from watercolor to collage. This mixed media artwork will be created on an 11” x 14″ piece of Arches paper. Color choices for your artwork will be your own palette preference. Pack a lunch. We will take a lunch break mid -way through our creative time.
December 11 Venison Done Right! with Eleva Potter
In this cooking demonstration by Environmental Educator, Eleva Potter, you will explore how to prepare and make eating venison a delicious experience for all palates. Eleva will cover marinades, steaks, roasts and burgers. Class participants will get an opportunity to sample a venison steak tostada, venison jerk burger and a classic venison roast.
December 12 Enjoy a Swedish Fika (fee-ka) with Eleva Potter
Join Environmental Educator, Eleva Potter, to explore the concept of hygge (“coziness”) by enjoying Swedish coffee, pastries and the traditions of Santa Lucia. Participants will get to try pepparkakor (ginger snaps), St. Lucia Saffron Buns, and Glogg (mulled wine).

Calling All Musicians
Help LOLA Create and Share Holiday Music
LOLA Arts will be participating in National Make Music – the Winter edition – again this year. We have developed an idea for Winter that musicians can help out with from afar. Our event will be a drop-in campfire gathering held in the LOLA parking lot on the designated Make Music Winter day with holiday music piped outside for people to enjoy AND join in by shaking SLEIGH BELLS and/other percussion instruments. 

Here is where you can help out. . . We’d like to compile our playlist from recordings sent in by you, our musicians!
