Traffic Mitigation Update
WARD III is requesting speed study for Mountain. Mountain Ave north of Ft. Lowell has a speed limit of 25, but south of it reads 30 mph. Does this section warrant a slower speed due to the many cyclists and pedestrians using the road?
SPEED HUMPS BY SCHOOL - The JPNA board agreed to fund one of the International School's speed humps from the Park Tucson monies allocated to Jefferson Park for traffic. The school has raised funds for one hump, Ward III is chipping in for the second and our neighborhood will fund the third - Hopefully, no more car crashes next to the kids!
BOARD DECISION - FUND THE HUMP
| |
TWO SPEED TABLES ON MOUNTAIN - JPNA board agreed to work towards two speed tables on Mountain. The next step are petitions and they need volunteers to circulate. The speed tables now depend on the signatures and our ability to raise funds.
Speed table - @ $8000-9000 each,
flat on top and 12 ft wide
BOARD DECISION - GO FOR THE PETITIONS
| |
|
|
ONE SPEED HUMP on Seneca
A hump is narrower than a table. The JPNA traffic committee is considering one hump on Seneca near Tyndall.
Speed humps - @ $5000-6000 each
NO BOARD DECISION YET
| |
|
TRAFFIC CIRCLE- The traffic committee is considering one traffic circle at Santa Rita and Seneca.
Traffic Circles - @ $15,000+ each
NO BOARD DECISION YET
| |
|
|
PETITION CIRCULATION - 60% of the residents within about one block of the mitigation will need to agree before anything can go forward. For more information or to volunteer to circulate petitions contact Joan joanchall@yahoo.com
| |
Pot time again in Jefferson Park
Getting ready for a neighborhood fundraiser. Do you have pots you could donate to the plant sale? We paint and plant for April. Clay or plastic pots can be transformed into things of patio beauty at the hands of our amateur artists. Decorated old watering cans turn out really nicely too. Contact Laurel Heather Milden trdswmn@cox.net or Joan Daniels jdchama@msn.com to donate. PS if you want to join a paint session let us know.
Grant Road Meeting - What did we learn?
Interesting takeaways from the meeting with DTM (Department of Transportation and Mobility) and PSOMAS
- 60% plans due in November or December
- Pelican crossings planned at Vine and Warren on Grant Road
- Dutch Intersection at Mountain
- RTA may fund Grant Road in this round (2026) and hopefully, will not move us to "RTA Next" (2033)
- Noise studies in progress to verify need for walls at certain sites
- Walls at the Michigan Left for light mitigation
- Jefferson Park and SAMOS advocating for Linear Park continuance.

Jefferson Park History
Pre and Post WWII Architecture
| |
Jefferson Park represents two distinct building periods – Pre-World War II and post-World War II. During the initial development of the neighborhood, 1898-1945, the homes reflected a variety of architectural styles including Bungalow, Spanish Colonial Revival, Pueblo Revival, Southwest and National Folk.* |
WINDOWS Note the three window treatments in the neighborhood: “Spanish Colonial Revival and Southwest style houses that were built prior to World War II often have a set of three arched windows on the front with a large fixed picture window in the center flanked by narrow operable windows, usually wood casement or single-hung sash.
|
FOUNDATIONS - rocks- Near the University and in surrounding neighborhoods, dark grey or black volcanic rock is found in walls and foundations. It came from a quarry at the base of “A” mountain. Formerly named “Sentinel Peak”, the mountain got its popular name after 1915. In 1915, after a football win against Pomona College, the team captain , Albert Condron organized the digging of the trench for an “A” which now appears on the east side of Sentinel Peak—forever after “A” Mountain.
The construction and cost of $397 was accomplished by donations and volunteer work by the students. The “A” is 70 feet wide and 100 feet long.
|
WINDOWS
Note the three-window treatments in the neighborhood: In postwar construction there is a rectangular variation of the tripartite window theme of the Spanish Colonial Revival and SW Style houses that is widespread. It consists of a large steel sash picture window flanked by a narrow vertical casement window.
|
After World War II, the style changed and was influenced by a growing population and its automobiles. America was in love with the automobile after the war--notice the many carports directly off the kitchens. The postwar styles include Transitional Ranch, Simple Builder Ranch, Simple Custom Ranch, Modern Ranch, Tucson Ranch, Postwar Pueblo and Postwar Territorial.*
*Excerpted from the “Character-Defining Elements of the Jefferson Park Neighborhood”
prepared by Scott Solliday, Archaeological Consulting Services, Inc., 2009.
| |
Late 1940’s - After the war, veterans flooded the University to obtain a degree. With them came a rush of home building--families, U of A professors, City planners, and others who began the work of growing Tucson.
| |
Remember these? Demolished !!
Jefferson Park lost contributing properties
| |
In order to be declared a historic district, over 50% of the homes must be fifty years or older and have facades that have not been significantly altered since original construction. Those homes are "contributing" and c receive a cut in their property taxes if owner (or family) occupied. Keeping our contributing homes is critical-owner occupied or rentals. We thank all those residents who care for their homes with this in mind.
