Starting a business is a big undertaking, and many business owners choose to structure their businesses as corporations, partnerships or LLCs for the benefit of limited liability. Although this protects you from being personally liable for company debts, there are still some circumstances where directors and officers can be held personally accountable for the company’s debts. If your company is starting to struggle financially, it’s important to understand the risks associated with being held liable for company debt.

The 7 Proposed Congressional Retirement Rules

This week, Congress is set to vote on retirement savings provisions that may aid Americans in acquiring and setting aside retirement savings.[1] The simplified but not exhaustive list of provisions is detailed below for our reader’s interest:

1.      Boost the age for necessary minimum distributions[1]

In 2023, when individuals turn 73 years old, a minimum amount must be withdrawn from their 401(k) or IRA every year.[1] Additionally, in 10 years, the age for necessary minimum distributions will increase to 75 years old.[1]

2.      Easing the way for part-time workers to save[1]

This provision details that part-time workers must be included to partake in a company’s retirement plan if employees have worked for 2 years and work somewhat 500 hours per year.[1]

3.      Granting employer matching contributions for student loan fees[1]

Employers would be allowed to produce a matching contribution to an employee’s retirement plan depending on the employee’s certified student loan repayment.[1]

EPA Hardens Pollution Guidelines for Large Vehicles

Starting in 2027, tougher pollution guidelines are set to commence for heavy-duty motor vehicles such as buses, large-scale vans, and large trucks.[2] The EPA’s new rule in reducing pollution will result in the reduction of soot and smog from heavy-duty trucks, specifically necessitating that they curtail the discharge of nitrogen oxides by almost 50%.[2]

Though this new rule has proved to be tougher in comparison to modern guidelines—it does not surpass California’s environmental rules for heavy-duty vehicles.[2] California has also implemented a new rule which is an estimated 90% stronger than present methods.[2] As state officials in California examine the EPA’s immobility towards issues such as electric trucks, the agency has signaled that tougher pollution guidelines for large vehicles are just the beginning of new standards.[2]
