Lifetime Member Awards are presented to members of Save-A-Turtle who go above and beyond to help our precious sea turtles here in the keys. Each of this year's recipients have been involved with SAT for at least 10 years. They volunteer as beach walkers and permit holders. Collectively they have all played a major role in writing and/or enforcing sea turtle friendly building and lighting codes, beach restoration, and a plethora of other projects to help protect and preserve our turtles throughout the island chain. More information on each recipient's contributions will be available on our web site in the near future. Congratulations to each of you and thank you for being a major force for SAT.
2018 Banquet Highlights
Hair Cut Raises $500 for SAT!
Dr. Doug Mader, MS, DVM of the Marathon Veterinary Hospital has been growing his hair for quite a while. Why? Well that's his story to tell. Being as the time arrived to cut it all off, he decided to use his hair as a way to raise money for SAT. We sold raffle tickets to SHAVE HIS HEAD and raised $500!

After his wonderful presentation at the Banquet. the winner was drawn and Dr. Doug's locks were no more! Thank you Dr. Doug for your support!
Awards, Presentations & Prizes
We had a full house at the banquet this year with a full schedule. In between the awards, Dr. Doug's presentation and shaving of his head, we also held a Chinese Auction with approx 50 prizes donated from local businesses including jewelry, snorkeling and dive trips, amazing pieces of art, and even a free Sky Dive! We thank everyone for your generosity, both those who donated and those who purchased tickets!
Nesting Season is Over...Event Season Begins!
'Tis the season to focus on our education and outreach programs throughout the Keys. On November 14th, SAT Board Members partnered with The Turtle Museum of Key West at the Annual Ocean Festival at Dolphin Research Center in Grassy Key. Third and 5th graders up and down the island chain came to DRC to learn about the Keys marine environment and wildlife.
Many other local organizations were on hand as well and in the end, we all met with well over 200 children and shared some really fun (and cool!) information with the kids and their teachers. Did you know it was even FUN learning about mosquitoes???

SAT provided a pictorial story line which showed the kids how a turtle nests, what we at SAT do to monitor and protect the nests, and what happens when the nest hatches. The Turtle Museum provided a really fun dice game that taught the kids about the dangers to hatchlings once they reach the water. Not to brag, but quite a few youngsters said we had the best booth!
And on Nov 24th, we attended the Island Arts Festival in Big Pine Key where we debuted our NEW TURTLE EDUCATION TRAILER! After LOTS of fund raising and a grant from the Florida Sea Turtle Licence Plate program, we finally have a new trailer! (You may recall Hurricane Irma destroyed our original trailer.) We are in the process of outfitting the inside with interactive programs, all related to sea turtles of course. We will keep you updated on our progress. In any case, we had lots of fun showing off our trailer and talking turtles with so many people. Thank you to all who came out to see us. Check out web site for future events.
