Tailored-service hotel partners with service-centric neighborhood bank
|
|
Maldonado says Yowie’s 13 different hotel rooms enable 13 different stays, particularly because they are furnished and decorated not just differently, but with furniture and artwork sourced from local artists and makers. And those wares are for sale, so the rooms are a dynamic showcase. That’s no surprise if you’ve seen the Yowie shop, downstairs from the “invisible service” hotel, or know of Abitbol or Maldonado’s other projects.
“We love working with a local lender who understands what we’re doing here on Second & South; who is willing to support and understand that,” Maldonado says. Abitbol concurs, noting that it’s unusual but gratifying to have an ongoing relationship with not only a lender, but with longtime employees of that lender – who know you and will work with you.
And that’s how Yowie works with its guests and neighborhood – in a tailored way. Guests get a handy guide with to-dos and other information selected for each person. The seamless service is balanced with leading-edge tech. Both the hotel and the shop are connected to local people and neighborhoods. In fact, Maldonado serves on the board of the South Street Headhouse District.
“We want to be the neighborhood guestroom when you have people coming to town…and we also have plenty of business and corporate clients who stay with us when they are in town,” she says. “It’s a pleasant surprise to see and hear guests and neighbors who feel invested in and part of what we are doing.”
Vessal says that kind of local investment also is what makes sense about working with Hyperion. “If a project makes sense,” he says, “they work with you on it and their people – like Frank, Frank is great – listen and check in. They’re interested and don’t waste (the customer’s) time. It’s a good old fashioned bank in that way – good bankers who make decisions and keep you moving.”
Yowie has extended discounts to people who live in the neighborhood, and Abitbol and his partners jumped at the opportunity to provide a discount to friends of Hyperion; if you are booking a Yowie stay, use the code HYPERION. (Thanks, YOWIE!)
And there’s more Yowie to come, as it is launching a line of home goods in 2024. Keep up with that, with the hotel and shop, and with its events, pop ups, workshops and other activations by following along on Instagram and Pinterest.

A love for math, finance + customer service
|
|
Ryan Elliott is a Loan Operations Specialist with Hyperion Bank’s Philadelphia banking office. His love of math & finance led him to the banking world.
“I wanted to get back to Commercial Lending, so I am ecstatic to join the Hyperion team,” Ryan says. “I love being able to assist local business owners that are here in my own backyard by being an asset in their growth and providing the best customer experience as possible.”
The “hardcore weather nerd” and hurricane forecaster whose dream is to one day be able to chase hurricanes, was born and raised in Harrisburg – the youngest of three siblings. He earned Bachelor of Science degrees in both Finance and Economics from West Chester University. Ryan and his partner Saba reside in Fishtown.

Fundraising & fellowship for one of our own

Team Hyperion recently participated in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Movement for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The sunny day was perfect for a 5K walk with 25+ people on our team. We raised over $3200 with a bank match dollar for dollar! THANK YOU to all of our donors, who gave from as far away as Arizona! We continue to stand beside team member Nicole H. every step of the way; Nicole’s fight is our Fight!

Community bankers up to date on tech
|
|
|
Recently Hyperion’s Amy Ellis & Carlos Laverde took a course with Frank Furness toward leveraging AI & ChaptGPT toward ever-improving customer service. Carlos says, “it’s always great to learn about the new technology that helps us be more efficient when responding to customer needs.”
Amy adds, “interesting and fun AI master class! Frank is an expert, but we were also in a room full of marketing experts from local companies. There are so many great tools (Loom, etc.) to help create content, improve ourselves as bankers and further facilitate our work on behalf of customers!”

In the community for senior expo
Hyperion’s Nicole Leitz recently attended the Senior Expo in the Second Senate District of Senator Christine M. (“Tina”) Tartaglione held at the Juniata Park Boys & Girls Club.
“We love the goal of this Senior Expo – empowering older residents of the district by providing them with information about issues important to them and services available through a wide range of public and prove providers,” says Nicole, who is Vice President & Business Development Officer at the bank. 30+ exhibitors attended, ranging from insurance, Medicare assistance, home health & more. Over 200 attendees were treated to this event with raffles and giveaways!
Hyperion – the only bank exhibiting – was able to touch base with attendees on bank accounts especially designed for them, as well as tips that help keep “fraudsters” out of their personal information & accounts. It was a great touch point with the seniors and other vendors, including the local police district. A favorite realization for many of the seniors we visited with: They can come to Hyperion’s nearby banking office and see and be helped by a human! :-)
